Brush Lag

Hello,

my brush is lagging after changing the color from the brush menu. I thought my file is too big so I tested with a brand new one (texture set to 2048x2048).

I'm using a Wacom Tablet. The lag is present while using the mouse too, but not that obvious.

Windows 11, latest version of Painter.

(Driver up to date for the tablet)

I saw many others that have this same issue, I wonder if there's a fix to this.

Thanks.

Thank you for your message, I really appreciate it!

I will give these a try and then test to see if it works.

I'm using Amd 6000 series too(6600). You can try pressing Ctrl+Shift+WindowsIcon+B (Driver Refresh) that might resolve the lag temporarily. This step improves my performance when I encounter laggy sliders, paint brushing. But lagging might comeback after some time.

I also suggest using AMD Pro 23q1.1 drivers: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-pro-win-23-q1-1

As any driver update past it might have issues: https://community.adobe.com/t5/substance-3d-painter-bugs/amd-radeon-pro-23q2-cards-drivers-are-broken/idi-p/13868239

Make sure to use cleanup utility when uninstalling drivers https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-601

I saw you already set Substance Painter as high performance in your graphic setting. Try setting Windows desktop manager to power saving in your graphics settings. (C:\Windows\System32\dwm.exe)

This might be a more permanent solution to our problems. I haven't tested it extensively but I think it's worth a try.

Hello,

Just a reminder that no one has answered me yet.

Hello,

Thank you for getting back to me. Frustration has built up over the years while using Photoshop, and I hoped Painter would be a different case. It's nothing personal, of course. I just want to paint and forget about lagging and issues with the program.

I found posts on Polycount and Reddit, I don't know if it's of any help, but I'll post the links: https://polycount.com/discussion/156331/is-my-substance-painter-slower-than-intended https://www.reddit.com/r/Substance3D/comments/wvpmm8/color_picker_too_slow_broken/

As a reminder, the lag appears when I change the color in the Brush Menu and start painting right away. Another bug that occurs while picking the color with the tablet is that the color selection target skips. For example, I move it to black, and instead of remaining there, it skips to the right towards the more saturated part (I can make a video demonstrating this).

I tested, and the lag doesn't occur when using 512x512. It starts lagging a bit with a 1024x1024 resolution and lags pretty badly with 2048x2048, using my tablet. Painting with the mouse works just fine.

I'm sending screenshots again to show that my drivers are up to date.

Thanks for everything so far.

I understand the frustration, but this isn't a common issue. We don't have many mentions of brush lagging, especially with specs like yours. I know you've mentioned other users facing the same problems, and I'd gladly take a look at their issue (if you don't mind sending a link). More cases, more leads.

To be honest, I doubt this is directly related to Painter, but you're right this isn't impossible. For example, if you have a very low poly object (e.g. a big single poly plane) and many layers with painted brush strokes, Substance 3D Painter will have trouble running smoothly. There could aslo be a conflict with the latest updates. However, from the video you sent, it doesn't seem to be the issue.

Therefore, my guess is that there's a GPU related problem, especially considering the log. To be fair, that wouldn't be surprising. Most of the tablet related problems were due to the tablet driver or the GPU driver.

I know it's frustrating that I can't give you a straight answer, but only small things to try.

In addition, I'd love to know if the lagging are diminshed when using a lower texture set resolution, it would means it's a performance problem, so once again probably GPU related. If you entirely remove the tablet driver, does the problem persist?

Keep me posted.

Hello,

no worries.

I'm confused about the GPU update because I checked when I sent the message and it was up to date. I also uploaded a screenshot where my AMD software showed just that, that it is updated. When I click on CHeck for Updates I get the status Up to Date. So I don't know what else to update.

As you can see from this screenshot, I didn't have Hardware Support Acceleration on.

I also added Painter to my list of apps and changed the Graphics preference to High Performance.

Plus, I don't expect a GPU driver update will solve the problem. It feels like you're giving me tasks to try in order to feel like I'm going somewhere, but the real problem might be that Painter isn't optimized.

I am still experiencing lag.

Hello Roxana,

Sorry for the delay in response.

Can you try to deactivate the Hardware Support Acceleration in Substance's settings?

From the log, I think the issue comes from the GPU, and considering this is an AMD one, this could be related to this feature.

You can also set the GPU performances in Window Display Settings.

Lastely, as mentionned in upper messages, I can see in your log that the GPU isn't updated. I don't know if it has been done after our conversation, but make sur to update it to the latest update.

Best regards,

Hello,

nobody got back to me. Is there a solution to this bug?

Thank you

I don't know if it's related, but I experience lag while painting too. On the painting layer I added a Glow filter.

It happens even if it's just a normal paint layer with no filter to it, but not always.

I'm wondering if there's a way to tell Painter to use the Graphics Processor (just like in PH).
