P: Edit In External Editor does not work/function

I can not send images from LR4 to any external editor via Photo>Edit In. My system is Mac OS 10.7.3. Using the Edit In command fails to open the external editor and no error message results. This occurs whether the images have the 2012 Process Version applied or not. My external editors are primarily PSE10 and Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.0. This is an important part of my workflow.

I have reinstalled PSE10 and updated to the newest version of Silver Efex Pro.

We're following along. What Paul and others note about how the "Edit in" menu works is true; that context (right-click) menu is built from the presets you set up in the Preferences dialog. For those of you who have had options seem to disappear from that list, do you recall ever setting them from the preferences dialog in the first place, or did they automatically show up when you installed the other software (i.e. Nik plugins)?

I get that Adobe may not have all hardware and all software configurations at hand, but I'm wondering why consumers who simply want to buy an Adobe product are now being treated like guinea pigs to fix a problem that should have been solved weeks ago. At this stage, I think the solution is to pick a few trusted users how use diverse hardware and software and let them go to town on testing the product and when all the bugs are worked out release it. This current approach leads to more and more people getting frustrated.
Adobe, I hope you realize how poorly you've handled this whole thing. I'm going to wait, the downloading, installing, uninstalling, downloading, installing, uninstalling process leaves me feeling like I'm stuck on a roller coaster.

Success with version 4.1 on my Imac.

I posted above that the fix did not work but I installed and uninstalled CS5 a second time and choose to uninstall the preferences as well. ( I am not sure what changed)

The second install and removal has worked for my computer and it now will edit properly.

The information from Paul is very essential as I don't think people quite understand the external editing system.

Other than Photoshop, the rest of the external editors are supported as Presets. You can create them and name them yourself or some of the installers from third party software will create them when the installer is run.

I just created a preset for Graphic Converter and it works. In theory you should be able to pass an image from LR4 to any external editor capable of supporting the format of the graphic you are exporting.

Of course some presets will not make sense as you can do a better job of editing in LR4.

On my Imac with 8 gb ram and Lion LR4 seems to be running a bit faster, other than the first startup. I have not restarted the computer yet.

I have decided ,after downloading LR 4.1 and it is still not working, that I am not going to download anything more until a reliable solution is found! My Nik plugins and Elements work in LR 3 and unless an answer is found within the next 28 days (how long I have before returning it) I will not keep it. I have alerted the photo groups I belong to as well as the Webinars I watch regarding LR4 that problem exsists. The fact that this happened without working out the "bugs" and no disclaimer to warn us that this is a problem, makes me wonder how reliable and trustworthy Adobe actually is!!

I have not tried the release candidate as of yet and have a question before I do. In order to make Edit In work in LR4, I downloaded the trial of CS5. So, if I download and install the 4.1 release candidate and Edit In works properly, how do I know that it is a result of the release candidate and not just having CS5 installed?

So, the fix to the problem is to create the need for more fixes. 'There is no doubt some pressure to get this fix out the door and put this whole affair behind everyone. I think those working on it need to be sent home to get some sleep. I suspect they've been working on this for weeks. I do hope Adobe can get the real fix up soon. I'm not about to do a registry edit or a work around, the first leaves me uncomfortable, the second, means I'm going to have to install things I don't need. I'm going to make the signs of the cross and hope this gets fixed soon. I just want to use the program as intended when I originally purchased it, three, gulp, wow, saying this makes me sad, three weeks ago.

I think I found a solution to the Edit In [one of your plugins]

Go to /Preferences/external editing.
In the 'additional external editor' you can give labels to each plugin you have. It is called a preset.
It is a bit clumsy, you have to give each plugin another label, otherwise you overwrite your other setting...

The plugins will show in the menu.
I didn't test this out, as I have to go and get the product keys...

Thought I let you know before that.

Just a followup.
If I reboot my system and relaunch LR then attempt to edit a raw file in CS5.1
Photoshop again hangs for 3 minutes before opening file. Normal is 10 -15 sec.
Another Note:
The option menu on edit in does appear if I edit tif file bit not if i edit a cr2 file.

How much per hour do you pay the people for testing your software?
