P: Edit In External Editor does not work/function

I can not send images from LR4 to any external editor via Photo>Edit In. My system is Mac OS 10.7.3. Using the Edit In command fails to open the external editor and no error message results. This occurs whether the images have the 2012 Process Version applied or not. My external editors are primarily PSE10 and Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.0. This is an important part of my workflow.

I have reinstalled PSE10 and updated to the newest version of Silver Efex Pro.

After upgrading to LR4 from LR3, I cannot access PE9, nor my NIK programs. They all worked fine in LR3. Any thoughts?

Here's another weird one - have been in the US with my laptop (WIN 7 X64 etc etc) and got my Nik editors to work as expected without setting up presets. Got back to Sydney and upgraded my Asus Tower to LR4 and could only get (wait for this) Silverefex Pro to launch as an editor. This same scenario also occurred on my husband's iMac - which has OSX 10.7.3 plus all recent OSX updates. Neither of us can get the other elements of the Nik Complete Collection Ultimate to work as external editors....I then tried RC1 for WIN and still no improvement. Both machines meet all the hardware and software requirements for Lightroom and CS. My WIN machine has CS4 and PS CS6 Public beta on it.

@ John Zawacki: I'm having the same issue, except that the file never opens in CS5...

Sill having issues:

1. When selecting to edit in a an external editor (for me CS5 ), it takes several minutes to open the file. It almost appears as if CS5 is hung but if you wait it eventually opens it up. This only happened the first time. Subsequent file open much faster.

If you close LR and restart it. The delay happens again on the first time editing a file.

2. Also some tone adjustments made in LR are not showing up in CS5.

Do you have a PC or Mac, and if a Mac, which operating system do you use.

I just called Adobe to ask about the fix for the Edit in function to operate and learned that their engineers are working hard on the beta version of CS6, so that's where their attention is going. No surprises here since that's much more of an expensive product, which will bring them greater profits. The person I spoke with said there might be a fix by the middle of May. That would mean a wait of 2 months to use a function that is a necessity in my work flow.

One other issue I've recently encountered in LR4 is that I can no longer update any collection after it is published to it's respective external sharing set (Flickr, Facebook, etc.). If I add new photos to a collection and try to re-post I get an error "Cannot update collection." I can add and post new collections but cannot update after publishing.

When are we going to see 4.1 out for general release? For goodness sake Adobe, when are you going to communicate with us and let us know what is happening, please....

I haven't. I don't know if it's an "official" release (yet) as Help/Check For Updates in the LR GUI tells me the software is up-to-date.

As you indicated before, going back to LR3 would be rather difficult, especially in the backwards metadata sync. I'm hoping Adobe gets their act together a little bit and 4.1 not only fixes the external editing error but no longer breaks the Flickr publishing subroutine as some have indicated.
