P: Unable to relaunch after File>New Catalog/Switching catalogs, or relaunching with certain plugins

Hello, I just updated LR Classic from v14.4 to v14.5 on Windows 10.
I’d like to report a major bug:

  • It is impossible to create a new catalog from within the application (Menu > File > New Catalog).
  • It is impossible to switch catalogs (except by clicking directly on the catalog file to open the application).

The window App closes, then nothing happens for several minutes (Task Manager shows a "zombie" Adobe process still running) → I have to kill It to reOpen the app.

I had to reinstall version 14.4 and everything is now working normally again.

LrC Vers. 14.5 lässt sich nach Beenden nicht mehr starten. Im Taskmanager läuft das Programm im Hintergrund weiter. Erst, wenn ich LrC im TM mit Task beenden  oder den PC herunterfahre, kann ich LrC erneut starten. LrC funktioniert einwand frei.

I am using LRC version 14.5 on Windows 11.

Everthing was running fine until yesterday when I quit LRC and tried to open it again, I would not.

I have to go to the Task Manager and end the task in order to be able to open it again.

I tried with severals catalogs, same thing.

I thought maybe Lightroom is organizig the catalog, I let run for the WHOLE DAY, it would not stop,

here is a screen grab from the task manager

I Have to end the task in order to be able to open LRC again

@Rikk Flohr: Photography  Like @ShootingPixelsAndy, I have experienced this problem with all versions of LrC14, if not earlier versions. I've used the "kill zombie instance" countless times in the past. I use several plugins (see attached list), but none of them are considered critical in this thread.

Sometimes it didn't even help to remove the zombie instance - trying to open Lightroom after killing it immediately ended up in a "zombie state". In these cases, I had to open and quit Lightroom Desktop to be able to open Classic.

I have not encountered any such issues with 14.5 so far but I have not used it very much yet.

I really hope that this bug report will put the team on the right track to find and fix the general, underlying issue.

I was pointed to this thread from another forum after discussing a problem there about Lightroom Classic 14.5 hanging on quit. It was recommended that I add my info to this thread. At some point (not exactly sure when), Lightroom Classic 14 began hanging after I did a standard File > Quit in macOS 15.6.

I traced it to the plug-in for the TourBox control surface. I currently have the plug-in disabled and Lightroom Classic can now quit properly again. I’ve been using their software for most of this year and don’t remember the plug-in causing any problems before, so is this because of a change in Lightroom Classic?

The plug-in version is the one included with TourBox Console software version 5.9.2.

After the latest update, Lightroom Classic 14.5 - whenever I go to close the app, it just hangs there and is showing as "not responding".  Have to use Force Quit to get it to shutdown.

1.  Version of app - Lightroom Classic 14.5

2.  Platform and OS Version - Apple Mac Mini M4 Pro - 48G/1TB 820GB free SSD space, Sequoia 15.5

3.  Repro Steps - Command + Q or selecting to quit the app from menu

4.  Expect Lightroom to shutdown, instead it stays active, shows the pinwheel icon like it is working on something, but never end.  Must go in and force quit the app to get it to shut down.

Apparently Lightroom Classic 14.5 doesn´t shut down when Midi2LR 6.2.0.1 is running.. See https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-unable-to-launch-lightroom-after-menu-gt-file-gt-new-catalog-or-switching-catalogs-win/idi-p/15457714. Do you have this plugin installed?

As a matter of fact I do.  Would I need to stop Midi2LR and then shut down LRc?

Yeh. I thought the Toolbox update had fixed it, but I didn't get the usual "update required" after installing it. After noticing a few other problems, I rebooted and found that probably was still there. Killing the zombi LR process using taskmanager or a process manager seems to be the best solution for now.

Hi, thanks for reaching out!

Please go to the Help menu in Lightroom Classic, then System Info, and copy the text. You can share the info with us by either pasting it as a reply here or in a text file and sharing the file with us. Where are you creating the catalog?

Meanwhile, you can try to reset the preferences of Lightroom using the steps mentioned here: https://adobe.ly/4lypu4c

Thanks,
Nikunj

I have the same problems after installing the update Lightroom version 14.5.

Since updating I can no longer re-launch Lightroom Classic after it is closed.

To get to relaunch I have to end task (2) in the task manager.
