P: Image does not return from Photoshop to my Lightroom Desktop Catalog

So I've successfully done all the updates mentioned, and attempted my first run with this process. It did NOT work.

36,191 images in my LR at the point of 'Edit in Photoshop' - PS launches, image appears, I make adjustements, duplicate a layer or two, close the file (and obviously agree to save the changes), image closes, and when I go back to LR (and wait a few mins to be sure), nothing has updated with the modified image.

I still have 36,191 images in my library.

So, these updates have not made any difference to me.

Switching to Rosetta does not solve the problem for me. The turnaround trip appeared to work the first time, but the layered Photoshop file was not saved in Lightroom. When I re-opened it in Photoshop, it was flat, and further changes were not saved back to lightroom.

I'm following this thread. I just posted another bug report about this because it still isn't resolved. I started posting here about it back in November of last year.

Oops, I see that my reply/report got added here.

Here is the issue. When I open an image from Lightroom in Photoshop (using the "Edit in Photoshop..." command), perform edits in Photoshop, and then save back to Lightroom, the edited image does not reliably appear in Lightroom. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

I reported this back in November in this thread in the Lightroom forum. I went through a huge amount of troubleshooting, including resetting preferences, reinstalling apps, etc. Nothing helped.

I finally chatted to an Adobe support rep today. I told him that I only have this issue on my M1 Macbook Pro—not on my iMac Pro. He suggested that I enable Rosetta mode in Photoshop. That completely fixed the problem.

I pointed out to the rep that I shouldn't need to run Photoshop in Rosetta to make it work properly. M1 Macs have been out for almost a year and a half! And this specific issue has been documented for at least 6 months because you can see posts about it (including mine) in the forums.

The rep said:

"Photoshop has minor feature differences when running under the native mode and the Rosetta emulation mode. Adobe is hard at work to reduce these feature differences in future updates. Yes, I appreciate your feedback and I would like to tell you that the engineering team is working on it and will soon get a fix."

He linked me to this page on Adobe's site. Down lower on the page, it says this: "Multi-app workflows, such as Copy and Pasting or Editing in Photoshop from Lightroom, between native and Rosetta emulation versions of Adobe applications will not work."

But that is exactly the OPPOSITE of the problem. I was running Lightroom and Photoshop in native M1 mode and it didn't work. The rep suggested I run Photoshop in Rosetta, and now it works (even though Lightroom is in native M1 mode).

I am posting this here because I want to be sure that this issue is being properly tracked and addressed—especially because it is not properly described on the page linked above.

I am running OS Monterey 12.3, Lightroom 5.2, and Photoshop 23.2.2

Same issue. New M1 Macbook Pro, Current versions of Lightroom and Photoshop. From Lightroom "Edit in Photoshop" Opens in Photoshop just fine. Edit. Save. Close. Does not return to Lightroom. Or does return to lightroom, but does not retain layers. Intermittent problem that seems to happen more often when there are more phtoshop edits (less often if I don't add layers, etc). But I don't have good stats on that, it's just my feeling. Happens at least 75% of the time. Maybe more.

When I "Edit in Photoshop", almost 95% of the time when saving and closing the image in PS, the image doesn't get returned to LR. I need to open the LR package and retrieve the file from the TemporaryEdits folder and manually add it back to LR.

MacOS 12.2.1

LR: v 5.2

PS: 23.2.1

Apple M1 Pro chip macbook pro

This has been happening for many months - can it be fixed?

I have the exact problem on my new M1 24 inch iMac. OCCASIONALLY it'll work, but the few times it has worked I've never been able to figure out why it worked. I've talked to Adobe support but they were not able to find a permanent fix.

So, after the latest release, we are much closer! After the release V23.2.1, I was able to succesfully round trip from Lightroom to Photoshop and back. The TIFF file returned as it should. The only remaining issue I have see is an error message when I try to quit Lightroom indicating that a file is open in Photoshop and will be lost if I quit now, even though photoshop isn't even open anymore. I am still able to quit, but I wanted to call that out. The other may be a misunderstanding on my part, but if I edit a photo in Photoshop, it should come back as a layed TIFF. If re-open that TIFF in Photoshop without making any changes in Lightroom, it should open the original TIFF with all of the layers. If my understanding is correct, then that is still an issue because I am getting a new TIFF every time without the layers of the old one. If I am incorrect and it is behaving as it should, then we are good and I'll file a separate idea to fix that.
