It happened to me too. 
When I opened LR on the iPad after updating to version 5.4.0 LR, all folders were empty.  😞

I lost about 200 finished photos and some bought and self created presets.

My iPad backup is 4 weeks old and contains only a few of the 200 new photos.  So I guess this doesn't really help.

I am very angry and disappointed. But I also don't have much hope that the disappeared photos can be restored.
Fortunately I have a backup of the unedited original photos. 

It's high time that adobe finally enables selective synchronization with the cloud. I can't synchronize all my photos on the iPad (256GB memory) with the iPhone (64GB memory).

By the way, I have a paid subscription.
