P: (MS App Store Version) Message: Some photos were not added. Unable to copy file.

Hi, I've recently subscribed to Lightroom and am being met with this error message upon trying to import any images.

'Some photos were not added. Unable to copy file.'

I've seen 2 other posts on here of the same issue but the solutions posted there didn't work.

I'm using windows 10, imported the files from my SD card to my hard drive. I am then trying to import to lightroom from my hard drive.

Thanks in advance

Windows Customers who have downloaded this app via the Microsoft App Store and are experiencing this error, will find relief by uninstalling the Microsoft App Store version of the software and installing it via the Adobe Creative Cloud app available here: https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/desktop-app.html

If you are willing to send us a diagnostic log first to help us troubleshoot this, please speak up here. We'll reach out to you privately with details.

I'm also seeking volunteers to gather some diagnostic info from.

I've uninstalled the Microsoft Store version and installed the version on Adobe website (installed via the Creative Cloud app). It works properly.

I have not kept track of any updates to the Store version but I guess, I'll settle for now. The reason I used the Store version was that i don't need to install the creative cloud app, but perhaps, it still has advantages in terms of keeping LR up to date.

Thanks. I have two windows PC that have same problem. Both were running Microsoft Store version. I'll replace them with the version from Adobe website and report back if problem persists.

Side question: if we know (for sure?) that the 5.1 version on Adobe website works and the one on Microsoft Store doesn't, why can't we go ahead to update the latter so that the auto update mechanism gets this fixed?

If you are having trouble getting the adobe.com version to install (rather than the Microsoft Store version), please try the following sequence.

  1. Uninstall the MS Store version of Lightroom
  2. Restart your machine
  3. Install from https://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom.html

Update (Dec 21, 2021)

Greetings all,

Recent research by engineering on this problem has revealed a few cluesbut we still need to collect additional information from you.

1. Make sure you are downloading via the Creative Cloud app and installing version 5.1 and not the Microsoft Windows App Store version.

2. If are importing directly from an SD card / device / phone, can you attempt reproduce while importing the same set of photos directly from disk instead.

If downloading from the Creative Cloud app and have installed version 5.1 and attempting an import from the hard drive instead of the card/device, and you are still seeing the error then we need to collect a Diagnostic Log from you.

For LrDesktop

  • Go to Preferences
  • Account Section
  • Hold down the [Opt/Alt] key to make [Diagnostic Log] button appear

If you have a diagnostic log ready to send respond here indicating thus and I will contact you.

Thank you for your patience.

Not sure if anyone has found a fix. But I did, well, a bypass rather. I started lightroom.adobe.com and add photos from there. Mine were film scans and I had about 200 of them. Failed miserably when using Lightroom Desktop (not Classic). Uploaded a few, failed most; restart Lightroom, get a few more success...and so on. But at the webpage version, I seletec all of them and boom! Everything was uploaded without issues. (My files were about 3-4MB large, jpg).

I think it's related to how Lightroom is using cache or memory. It has to be fixed but right now, using the webpage version seems to work good enough.

Does this link work for you? Look for the Lightroom icon here and click Install.

The same guidance as above applies to you, Alma. Please stop using the Microsoft Store build of Lightroom and move to the one found on adobe.com.
