P: 23.2 Issue - Previously saved files with adjustment layers open with strange colors

After updating to Photoshop 23.2, if you have a file previously saved (example .psb) with adjustment layers like Curves or Channel Mixer, the image opens up with strange colors in the part of image where the adjustments impacts. To fix the issue, I need to go to adjustment layer, turn it off (via eye icon) and turn it back on.

Photoshop team, could you please fix this bug so I do not have to use above hack on my previously saved images with adjustmensts when I open them.

System

Windows 11

Is this a graphic card issue because my computer is pretty old?

Problem: When using any adjustments feature in PS, the image I am editing almost looks like I posterized it. However, as soon as I make adjustments, the image looks normal again (with said adjustments made). This is a repeated issue--regardless of restarting program, computer, etc.

TIA for any answers, assistance!

Hi @batilly84, sorry you are seeing this.  Couple things to try:

We have other reports that MachinePrefs.psp was causing this issue.

  1. Quit Photoshop
  2. Navigate to Photoshop's Preferences folder.

macOS: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Windows: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

  1. Remove the file called MachinePrefs.psp from inside the settings folder and move it to your desktop

If that fixes the issue, please share the MachinePrefs.psp file.

It would also be good to update to the lateste version of Photoshop.

Thank you,

Moving file to desktop worked for me - I don't know how to share the file with you as you requested, but if you want it - contact me and I can send it to you. 🙂

Trashing the MachinePrefs.psp file fixed this issue for me. Here's my corrupt file.

After update and opening file I get this mess. Mess is different each time I open the file(s). Enabling/disabling layers does not update the image, Photoshop cannot save even a new file while this is open.

Time and time again, new glitches emerge, each update gets worse. Should I demand a refund?

It might have to do something with groups and masks, layered masks. Problem with groups and masks have been getting progressively worse since 2018.
Example:
I have a group with 20 layers.
I deactivate the group. Visually nothing happens.
I have to click on another group to see the changes.
And vice versa.

I rolled back, can open the project fine but layer group issues and other glitches remain.
I managed to open this file just fine and damn fast in Affinity, will make a transition to that since your subscription model is not working and you could not fix your software.

Gracias.

Bonjour,

Hi. You need to check the color setting of the monitor (profile, calibration, etc) in the operating system.

I have installed PS 2022 version 23.2.2 and it is creating a problem that makes it unusable for me.
The problem looks like this     (that's a car interior!)

When I add adjustment layers that strange "posterize like" effect happens.
If I make an adjusmtmet to the layer it vanishes.
If I open a previously layered files with adjusments, those adjustments display that same strange effect.
Masked elements above adjustment layers will display fine.
Creating a new adjustment layer with a mask...only the masked area is effected.

The adjustment layers that are displaying the problem are:
-Levels
-Channel Mixer
-Color Balance
-Curves
-Posterize
In addition these adjtment layers cause it to crash every time:
-selective color
-photofilter

This occures in any RGB and CMYK color space. Any size file. Any number of layers.

I have 2021, 2020 and 2019 installed and they work fine.

My work station is a company iMac working from home

iMac (Retina 5k, 27-inch, Late 2015)
Catalina 10.15.7
4 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
Memory - 64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 (4x16GB)
AMD Radeon R9 M395Z 4 GB

------
What I tried to fix it:
Deleting preferences
Turning off the Graphics Processor
Turning off each of the 3 advanced graphics processor settings in various combiniations

I uninstalled and reinstalled photoshop

-----
Has anyone seen this problem or know of a solution?
Keeping my fingers crossed. lol.

Edit: added a bit more info

SOLVED

Delete "MachinePrefs.psp' from the settings folder

macOS: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

others with the same problem.. try "resetting preferences" a simple thing
but worked for me.
