Yep, in this case it would be Scenario 1: The computer restarts because of a Stop error, and Event ID 41 contains a Stop error (bug check) code

I can click a multitude of tools within Photoshop and immediately cause a complete system crash (Event ID 41) (object selection tool, healing tool, color replacement tool, occasionally just opening an image causes it) Many times I don't even have to interact with the image file, just the action of clicking on those tools themselves (the icon) will cause a crash/Event 41. Seeing as this is the only application on my system having any issues, and this is a newer system build / OS install within the past 6 months that has not had any issues, and still continues to have no issues in daily use, outside of Photoshop... this leads me to one conclusion.. Photoshop is the culprit causing the issue.

@michaelw9942706 the team is seeing a Event ID 41 in the report and shared this:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/performance/event-id-41-restart

Here is the info in the About this shutdown:

When a shutdown is initiated, Windows sends a WM_QUERYENDSESSION message to all running applications that have a user interface (UI) thread. This message asks the application to save any unsaved data and terminate gracefully. If the application does not respond to the message within a certain time limit, Windows sends a WM_ENDSESSION message to the application, which terminates the application immediately.

If all applications respond to the WM_QUERYENDSESSION message and terminate gracefully, Windows logs a clean shutdown event in the System event log. If any application does not respond to the message or terminates abnormally, Windows logs a dirty shutdown event in the System event log.

The unexpected shutdowns are mostly caused by components outside the operating system.

A dirty shutdown is when a computer system is shut down without going through the proper shutdown process. This can happen when the power is suddenly cut off or when the computer is forced to shut down by holding down the power button. A dirty shutdown can cause data loss or corruption and can also lead to boot-up problems.

The dirty shutdown count registry is a registry key in the Windows Registry that is used to track the number of times a computer system has been shut down without going through the proper shutdown process. This key can be useful when troubleshooting boot-up problems to identify whether the system was powered off incorrectly.

You can also clear all the values (like DirtyShutdown, LastAliveStamp, TimeStampInterval) in the following registry key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Reliability. This can help prevent the Shutdown Event Tracker from appearing after an unexpected shutdown.

@michaelw9942706 a couple more questions:

  1. Adobe Photoshop is the only app with this issue?
  2. Did this begin with 25.0?
  3. Are you overclocking ?

@michaelw9942706 if you could send me a WinOS crash log it might be possible to see where the crash is happening. Send to shubert@adobe.com

@CShubert understood. Not much else I can do, Ive stress tested both cpu and gpu for hours in the past 24 hours, and can push them to the limits without issue on various applications (stress test, gaming and ai generation) . Unfortunately seems to be a problem between adobe and it's interface with drivers or windows operating system. Especially when somthing as simple as opening a 1mb png can cause a full system crash.

@michaelw9942706 we know you are very confident that it is NOT hardware related, but a system hang or freeze requiring a computer restart usually means a low level failure such as a driver (bad video card driver, etc), failing hardware (hard disk, video card, etc.) or damaged OS installation.

Looking at the help file, it seems it should typically generate a crash file dump prompt to submit upon re-opening, but it's causing such a sudden crash, this isn't even a blue screen or other issue, it's an immediate power cycle / reboot, I don't think it has time to capture a crash as it doesn't even save the last opened files and recover them.

@CShubert just using whatever the default download (2024) version is from the email link that is sent when you subscribe. My form email and account are the same. Where might I find a crash dump file to send ?
