P: CS6 Slow compared to CS5.1 with large files

PS CS6 has a lot of enhancements and great features. it launches very fast, and the control is very responsive and smooth.

although i am experiencing some speed issues with very large files. compared to CS5.1, where i don't have any of these issues.

the files are PSBs, 9000x8000px, 80+layers, RGB, 8bit

i have the same performance settings for both, cs6 and cs5
i am working on MAC PRO, 16GB ram, SSD scratch, 2TB raid, Radeon HD 5770, Snow Leopard.

the main issues i have are:

- no refresh when i move the curve on adjustment layer. the refresh comes after i let go.
- jagged pan
- extremely slow moving of layers and layer groups, even if they are with smaller dimensions (800x400pix)

again, working with files with less layers or smaller dimensions is very fast.

thanks for your help and support!
m.

As I've been saying: help us figure out what is different about your system that is causing a slowdown that other people are not seeing.

Ignore my above comment - it did change the size - I needed to restart Photoshop to see the change. As to whether this helps or not I haven't been able to test yet.

You changed cache level and tile sizes between versions, and that will affect the size in memory. Also, I think I fixed a few bugs back in CS4 and CS5 were we weren't accounting for all the data in the document size.

The file size doesn't mean much - the document size (pixel count) and compression settings would tell us a lot more. Also, some documents can contain a lot of metadata that adds to the document saving time.
Without seeing the file to figure out why it might take a while to save - we have no way to know whether that time is normal or not.

Further, as nothing so far has helped Photoshop run properly please can you tell me what I can do now other than return CS6 and get my money back?

I just tried that document on MacOS 10.6.8 and Win7 Photoshop CS6 release -- moving the white dots group is identical in performance to Photoshop 12.0.4, and I never get a progress bar.

I tried with and without the app frame, with and without tabs, with and without all palettes (hiding palettes speeds it up in both versions).

With layer thumbnails on in CS6 I get about 6 FPS updates, without layer thumbnails I get about 35 FPS (12.5% zoom).

So, we need to figure out why you get a progress bar. My guess would be a third party plugin, or an event script (like the ones a certain prepress product installs without your knowledge). Try disabling all third party plugins, and check File -> Scripts -> Scripts Event Manager (it should all be off and empty).

If it lags while dragging layers - make sure that layer thumbnails are turned off. We already know about the layer thumbnail problem, and are working on it.

CS3 did not have a tile size preference - it was automatic based on the RAM installed on your machine, with a plugin or registry key to allow for larger sizes on machines with a large number of processors. We made that more visible in later versions.
