P: CS6 Slow compared to CS5.1 with large files

PS CS6 has a lot of enhancements and great features. it launches very fast, and the control is very responsive and smooth.

although i am experiencing some speed issues with very large files. compared to CS5.1, where i don't have any of these issues.

the files are PSBs, 9000x8000px, 80+layers, RGB, 8bit

i have the same performance settings for both, cs6 and cs5
i am working on MAC PRO, 16GB ram, SSD scratch, 2TB raid, Radeon HD 5770, Snow Leopard.

the main issues i have are:

- no refresh when i move the curve on adjustment layer. the refresh comes after i let go.
- jagged pan
- extremely slow moving of layers and layer groups, even if they are with smaller dimensions (800x400pix)

again, working with files with less layers or smaller dimensions is very fast.

thanks for your help and support!
m.

OK, I need to get a copy of that document and instructions on which group to move -- something odd is happening to cause that much change in compositing time.

If a right mouse click doesn't work almost instantly - then something is interfering with events on your system. We've seen a few customers report that their web browser was causing that (and suspect flash).

Check your preferences - if you changed the tile size or cache levels, that would affect the document size in memory. (and file size has little relation to document size, due to compression)

It's just taken me 36 seconds to save a 366KB Jpeg - is this some kind of record?

Any response from Adobe on the above?

P.S. I have tried the cache tile setting with all the 4 options available but the layered file size still remains the same for each setting 😞

Thanks Laden. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a Cache Tile setting option in CS3 in Preferences > Performance like there is on CS6.

Sorry I deleted your file after testing. I'll have another try this afternoon.

tom thanks for testing the file.

can you confirm thjat you also have the same non-refreshing adjustment layer behavior. do you get instant refresh when you move a point of the the adjustment curve on top of the layers, or you get the refresh right after you leave the point?

hi tom,

the reason for the different size shown in tne info panel is the Cache Tile Size setting in Preferencies / Performance. probably you have different cache tile size set in CS3 and CS6. try to set the same tile size and see if the doc size is equal.

Hi Laden,

I downloaded your file. I am getting laggy, jagged movement when dragging individual layers. In fact all of the issues you describe above.

Have you compared the layered file size in CS6 (5.28GB) with the size in CS5 as I noticed a discrepancy between layered file sizes in CS6 and CS3?

I'm just repeating my reply here from above to ensure it gets attention:

I've now updated to 10.7.4 but I'm afraid this has had absolutely no effect whatsoever. Still unresponsive on all fronts even down to the mouses right click functionality - works sometimes and doesn't others.

One major thing I have noticed is that my layered file sizes are massively larger than when I was on CS3 - why is this? I have just transferred a file that is 8.24MB file size / 952MB layered on CS 6 on my new mac back to my old mac running CS3 and the size is 8.24MB file size / 206.3MB layered. There seems to be a major discrepancy. Please can you let me know on this?
