P: CS6 Slow compared to CS5.1 with large files

PS CS6 has a lot of enhancements and great features. it launches very fast, and the control is very responsive and smooth.

although i am experiencing some speed issues with very large files. compared to CS5.1, where i don't have any of these issues.

the files are PSBs, 9000x8000px, 80+layers, RGB, 8bit

i have the same performance settings for both, cs6 and cs5
i am working on MAC PRO, 16GB ram, SSD scratch, 2TB raid, Radeon HD 5770, Snow Leopard.

the main issues i have are:

- no refresh when i move the curve on adjustment layer. the refresh comes after i let go.
- jagged pan
- extremely slow moving of layers and layer groups, even if they are with smaller dimensions (800x400pix)

again, working with files with less layers or smaller dimensions is very fast.

thanks for your help and support!
m.

I've now updated to 10.7.4 but I'm afraid this has had absolutely no effect whatsoever. Still unresponsive on all fronts even down to the mouses right click functionality - works sometimes and doesn't others.

One major thing I have noticed is that my layered file sizes are massively larger than when I was on CS3 - why is this? I have just transferred a file that is 8.24MB file size / 952MB layered on CS 6 on my new mac back to my old mac running CS3 and the size is 8.24MB file size / 206.3MB layered. There seems to be a major discrepancy. Please can you let me know on this?

hello chris,

i just made some tests as well on my side and created a test file which shows exactly the issues most of us here are seeing. is it possible to share this file with you and also everyone else here, so we can see if we are talking about the same problem.

the file contains a lot of gradients with masks and a lot of multiplied dots in separate groups.

the problems i am experiencing with this particular file are:

- extremely slow moving of groups of layers (test file: white dots group)
- very slow pan
- not immediate redraw when changing adjustment layer (curve, levels, H/S)

the things does improve with thumbs off, but still not usable and very slow. still getting the progress bar when moving bunch of layers (white dots group) and can not follow the movement.
i don't see any improvements turning cache levels to 2, i is getting even worse. turned back to 6 levels.

all this compared with cs5.1 on the same mac, sys info is somewhere in the beginning of the thread. moving the dots on cs5.1 is jagged but follows the movement.

here a link with the file:

everyone else having the sam issues, feel free to download the file and test it on your side.
please give us your results here.

thanks!

I am moving 1 group of layers (typically with 3 layers in it). I originally had my cache level higher (I think it was 6 or something) based on posts in this thread I dropped it to 2.

Well, if the performance is different from CS5, then something is different about your document or settings - and we need to find out what.

Were you moving the whole document, or just a subset of layers?

And for a document that size, you may want to increase the image cache level (to 6 or so).

These are mostly groeps of layers that have pixel layers in them. Most of them have 1 pixel layer with a regular mask another layer has a layer effect turned on (drop shadow). It is often a group that has typically 2 to 4 other layers in it. This file has about 80 groups (160 to 300 layers estimated).

OK, in that sample Photoshop is compositing the image (mostly masks). Are you using any particular kind of layer (vector shapes, pixel layers with masks, etc.) in your image?

I just emailed you the sample report. I hope it helps to get to the bottom of this.

In heated support situations, canned responses tend to make things worse.
(I've seen that go down too many times)

Trying to help the customer understand the situation, and that we're trying to help (even if we can't solve problems instantly), usually helps if they're willing to listen.

Yes, something was lost in translation there -- the phrase was neutral, just referring to disabling all the third party plugins (instead of disabling only some).

OK, that rules out the most obvious sources of problems.
Now we get to the non-obvious. Do you know how to sample an application using Activity Monitor? (click the process name, then use the "sample process" button at the top)
If you can sample the app while it's acting slow, that might give us some idea where the time is going. You probably don't want to post the full report here, but can you post a link to the file here, or email it to ccox (at) adobe (dot) com ? Then I'll see if I can find anything in there that indicates a problem.

Allright, I got rid of the plug-ins the quick and dirty way (dragged them into a temp folder on the desktop.) Restarted the machine and PS. Had PS start as only application.

No difference whatsoever. The same file is slow as it has ever been when dragging a layer.
