P: CS6 Slow compared to CS5.1 with large files

PS CS6 has a lot of enhancements and great features. it launches very fast, and the control is very responsive and smooth.

although i am experiencing some speed issues with very large files. compared to CS5.1, where i don't have any of these issues.

the files are PSBs, 9000x8000px, 80+layers, RGB, 8bit

i have the same performance settings for both, cs6 and cs5
i am working on MAC PRO, 16GB ram, SSD scratch, 2TB raid, Radeon HD 5770, Snow Leopard.

the main issues i have are:

- no refresh when i move the curve on adjustment layer. the refresh comes after i let go.
- jagged pan
- extremely slow moving of layers and layer groups, even if they are with smaller dimensions (800x400pix)

again, working with files with less layers or smaller dimensions is very fast.

    Sorry, the first thing I did was kill every other application that was running (including Bridge) and when that did not help check the Activity Monitor for unusual applications or strange memory or CPU performance. Both memory as well as CPU were hardly stressed and no other strange behaviour (besides PS being sluggish).

    The first thing I did was de-activate and uninstall third party plugins. None of this did make any difference to PS performance.

    I am not going to uninstall 'all those 3rd party plugins' again, only if you have a clear indication that either Onone, AlienSkin or Nik plug-ins are known culprits. I know both Onone as well as AlienSkin are extremely keen on having their plugins run smootly on PS (Nik is a completely different story). Do you realize what an extra PITA that is? Besides, it can be the fact I am a non-native English speaker but I find that term 'disable all those third party plugins' pretty condescending. Quite a few of those 3rd party plugins are quite useful for generating my income.

    The other thing I tried was running only PS nothing else. This did not make any noticeable difference in performance.

    First thing to try: disable all those third party plugins, then see if the performance changes.
    Are you running other applications at the same time as Photoshop - as an experiment, can you close the other applications and see if Photoshop's performance changes? (we had some reports of browsers causing some issues)

    Yes, we tested on a huge variety of systems, and had thousands of beta testers testing on an even larger variety of systems.

    Just because you are experiencing a problem does not mean that everyone else is experiencing a problem. And the evidence is that most people are not experiencing performance problems -- so there is something on your system that triggers a problem, and we need to figure out what that is.

    We're users of Photoshop as well - we wouldn't put up with such problems if we saw them -- but we have not seen them.

    We're not blaming you in any way - we're trying to help you get to the bottom of the problem, and then see if that cause might be the same on other systems as well.

    And it could be that we're telling you the truth and you really aren't helping.

    First thing you should do is update to MacOS 10.7.4 to pick up the video driver fixes. (not sure if they'll solve your problem, but Apple did fix a lot)

    I have turned off the thumbnails in the layer panel. Set the cache to no more than 2 and still with files in the 10000x7000 range with 100+ layers PSCS6 is slow as a turd. Moving a layer takes forever and most annoyingly the program is hardly responding. Movement of the layer has a lag of over several seconds.
