P: CS6 Slow compared to CS5.1 with large files

PS CS6 has a lot of enhancements and great features. it launches very fast, and the control is very responsive and smooth.

although i am experiencing some speed issues with very large files. compared to CS5.1, where i don't have any of these issues.

the files are PSBs, 9000x8000px, 80+layers, RGB, 8bit

i have the same performance settings for both, cs6 and cs5
i am working on MAC PRO, 16GB ram, SSD scratch, 2TB raid, Radeon HD 5770, Snow Leopard.

the main issues i have are:

- no refresh when i move the curve on adjustment layer. the refresh comes after i let go.
- jagged pan
- extremely slow moving of layers and layer groups, even if they are with smaller dimensions (800x400pix)

again, working with files with less layers or smaller dimensions is very fast.

thanks for your help and support!
m.

There can't be an update until we can reproduce the problems and find the causes. So far the only problem that is reproducible is the layer thumbnail slowdown - which has a workaround, and we're testing the fix for.

For the vast majority of users, Photoshop CS6 is working as fast or faster than CS5. But some users are experiencing slowdowns on their systems, and we've been trying to work with them to determine why their systems are showing slowdowns that other people are not seeing, and that we cannot reproduce.

Please do not assume that because you are experiencing a slowdown that all users are seeing the same thing - because they are not. You have a performance problem on your system - let's try to figure out why your system is showing this when other systems do not.

No, it is not clear that there is a fundamental problem. A few people are having performance problems, with quite different descriptions (despite the claim that "everything is slower", the details are different).

We've reproduced the layer thumbnail slowdown, and are testing a fix for that.
But we have been unable to reproduce the other problems listed -- and we've spent a lot of time trying.

You're not being "fobbed off" - we're trying to help you get to the bottom of the problems you are seeing on your system.

Dear Adobe, please stop saying these problems are 'specific to their systems and/or not widespread and mostly not reproducible'. This isn't coincidence anymore if so many people have the same problems. Do you guys really do some real testing on several types of computers? Do you guys even try to stand in our shoes (in other words understand the users) to understand the problems? There are serious issues with PS CS6 that are certainly NOT related to our systems. Easy to blame others! It's easy to say: "I don't see what you mean, I cannot reproduce the problem, so there are no problems." It could be your are lying (in other words you do know there are problems, but don't want to admit it) or you are just ignorent.

People like us are professional users, who have paid for the software and depend on the software to work properly to get work done on a daily basis.

I have had layer thumbs turned off already to no improvement.

I think what is frustrating people is that it is seems clear that there is a fundamental problem with the application and touting specific fixes that seem to have no effect further exacerbates the frustration. Most users posting here will be experienced Photoshop users who will not be easily fobbed off.

i'm afraid none of the suggested remedies above helped.

My machine spec is:

Processor 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D2001)

Dragging layers sounds like the layer thumbnail slowdown discussed above. Turn off layer thumbnails for the time being.

But saving files slowing down isn't something we've seen before. (and background save allows you to keep working while the files are saving)

Moving windows around the screen is just dependent on the OS and your video card driver --- you can try turning off GPU drawing, relaunching Photoshop, and see if that helps. If it doesn't, then there is something else interfering with redraw or event handling.

What manner needs improvement? We're simply trying to help users diagnose problems that seem to be specific to their systems (not widespread, and mostly not reproducible).

As a small design agency we absolutely rely on Creative Suite for our work and principally Photoshop. Having recently invested in equipment updates and an upgrade to CS6 this is incredibly frustrating, if not potentially damaging to our business that Photoshop simply isn't working.

There is a distinct lack of effort by Adobe to tackle this problem head on. Having spoken with their customer services department there was a very vague attempt to look at the problem that essentially culminated in the sentiment that most of our users are entirely happy with speed. Rubbish!

All of the other core products in CS6 are working well. This is a specific issue with Photoshop CS6 which Adobe are struggling to respond to.

Given the cost of the software, the fact that it is essential to the majority of people who use it professionally, we'd expect a much stronger and more focused response from Adobe.

WHEN WILL THERE BE AN UPDATE TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES THAT ARE DETAILED IN THIS POST?

I have actually already spent 30 mins on the phone with an Adobe rep today trying to fix the issue with absolutely no positive results.
My problems are:

— Dragging layers is laggy
— Saving PSD's is very slow
— Saving Jpegs even is slow
— Moving files around the screen is laggy

...to be honest the whole application is unresponsive and slow. As mentioned this is on a clean, brand new maxed out iMac. Photoshop is installed on an internal SSD drive.

Nothing is slow on my system except Photoshop - all other CS6 apps are fine. What more info do you require?

Further to the comments above, I think the manner of responses from Adobe need a vast improvement.

Please read the rest of the topic. There are multiple possible problems, and multiple possible causes.
You need to identify what specifically is slow on your system, and see if it is covered by the known issues already discussed.

I have a brand new iMac Quad Core 3.4GHz i7 / 16GB RAM / Solid State Drive running CS6. Photoshop is incredibly laggy with medium/larger files.

Having spent £3.5k to get a machine and package that would be super fast this is incredibly frustrating and just not good enough. PLEASE SORT THIS OUT ADOBE.
