P: Dialog boxes / error messages pop up invisibly - macOS

When an error or alert occurs the dialog box is invisible. Some examples of the alerts include but are not limited to: "No pixels were selected because the layer is empty" or "Do you want to save the document before closing?" Clicking anywhere on the screen prompts an audible error noise (as though you tried to click outside of the dialog box you've been prompted to respond to). The box is not appearing on a different monitor or behind other windows, it is simply invisible and cannot be interacted with unless you press Enter or Escape on the keyboard. Upon pressing the Escape key to close the dialog box, the box becomes visible for a fraction of a second before closing—revealing its location. This has hindered my workflow, especially when trying to close a document I don't want to save changes to because then I must force Photoshop to quit. Running on Mac. Version 23.2.2

Photoshop, select Help > System Info... so we know where to begin to test and identify any other useful bread crumbs

  1. In the System Info dialog, click Copy.
  2. Attach or copy the info here to this thread.

I am using an action that throws the dialog on my M1 and I am not seeing the behavior yet.

Is anyone else having issues with their newest Macbook M1 running on Monterrey in photoshop?

Bugs I currently experience:

- trying to close a file without saving, the window that will ask you if you want to save or not doesn appear, I only see if once i click esc to basically abort the tast. It flickers up and goes. Only closing out Photoshop helps

-Liquify task for a selection. I can liquify for the whole image. but if I decide to only wanna liquify within a selection of an image it lets me to the task but once entering the liquify and getting to the main image view the liquify doesn't apply at all and I have to redo without the selection.

My computer is fully updated with everything and this never happened beofre I got my new laptop but this is super annoying and really shouldn't happen and hope can be fixed asap

I do have some plugins installed, of course - I'll give it a try, though "Attention Insight" is none of them - however, I haven't had any changes in these plugins for a while now, and everything was fine a while ago.

@leaderz That's an interesting observation. I wonder if the other folks have this or other Plugin/extensions installed.

This could be unrelated, but I haven't seen this error since I removed/disabled all Photoshop plugins that I had active. I am unsure of what they all were, but I know one of them was Attention Insight for Photoshop

I can confirm this bug still happening (macOS 12.3.1, Adobe Photoshop Version: 23.3.1 20220419.r.426 4d24a4c arm64) - incredibly annoying, forcing me to save files I do not want to save.

I've attached a screencast for demonstration:

I am also experiencing the same issue. Have added further detail below to assist with debugging.

Issue: Dialog boxes/prompts/pop ups not displaying when performing an action that requires confirmation.

Photoshop version: 23.3.1 (plus the previous version I had installed - not sure what it was)

OS: Mac OS Monterey v12.3.1

Chip: Apple M1 Max (in case it's relevant)

Steps to reproduce:

I have not given specific reproduction steps as this issue is widespread and by providing specific reproduction steps, it could be interpreted as only occurring with those specific parameters. The steps taken are common actions that people perform, and there's nothing special about the files that I'm editing. I have experienced these issues on multiple files.

Some examples of when this issue has occurred are:

  • Closing a file that has unsaved changes
  • Resizing an image to a smaller size
  • Flattening an image that has many layers
  • Applying transforms to a shape

The issue occurs both when an external monitor is connected as well as when the external monitor is disconnected and I'm just using the laptop monitor. Please note: I had never connected an external monitor to the laptop prior to this issue occurring so the issue was not caused by having an external monitor connected. I connected an external monitor to try and debug the issue. I tried shifting the main photoshop window to the external monitor in case the dialog box was hidden behind the main window but no such luck.

I tried the Cmd + Tab solution mentioned by Jeffrey but this makes no difference.

As the original poster mentioned, the dialog is invisible until you press a key (escape or enter) and then it briefly appears (though not long enough to actually read it) before disappearing again. As you can't read it, you don't know what exactly you're agreeing to if you press enter. This really needs to be fixed or people will end up with unintended results, one of which is potentially losing their work.

Expected result:

When an action requires confirmation and there is a blocking dialog box, the dialog box should be displayed on top of the active Photoshop window. The user should be able to close the dialog box by:

  1. pressing either the close or cancel buttons; or
  2. pressing the Ok/Confirm button to confirm that the action should be completed.

(Please excuse me if the button names mentioned above are not accurate - I'm not entirely sure what's written on the buttons as they're not displayed long enough to be able to read them.)

Actual result:

When an action requires confirmation and there is a blocking dialog box, the dialog box is hidden so the user is unaware that they need to provide confirmation.

If you press a key that is not enter or escape, an alert sound is audible but there is still nothing displayed on screen and the user is still blocked from doing anything else.

If you press the escape key, the dialog box will briefly display (max. 2 seconds) before disappearing and no action is performed (whether that be closing the file, resizing the file, flattening the image, etc).

If you press the enter key, the dialog box will briefly display (max. 2 seconds) before disappearing and the requested action will be performed.

Do any of you with this issue have Enable Full Keyboard Access checked in Apple>System Preferences>Accessibilty>Keyboard>Navigation and if so, does unchecking it make any difference?

The system i'm using for this post and reference to the above setting is macOS Monterey 12.3.1 on a Mac Sudio with an M1 Processor.

Same issue here. Anytime a dialog box is triggered, it remains hidden behind the canvas. The app isn't frozen, as either hitting the return or escape keys on the keyboard confirm or cancel the dialog box, even though it can't be seen. I first noticed this issue when running some of my retouching actions...nothing appeared to be happening, and clicking anywhere just made the computer beep at me, as nothing was clickable. Then when pressing escape or return, the dialog would briefly flash in front of the canvas before either dissappearing or continuing, based on the keyboard command I gave. Issue appears to have begun after latest update.

16" Macbook Pro M1 Max - 64GB Unified Memory - 10 Core CPU - 32 Core GPU

External Monitor - DELL U3415W (issue occurs whether or not PS is displaying on external or built-in monitor)

Wacom Intuos Pro Medium (issue occurs whether or not tablet is connected)

Mac OS (12.3.1),

PS updated 4 days ago to 23.3.0 via CC app

Hi @J453,

I'm having the same issue where all the pop-up dialogue boxes are hidden behind/invisible. I can make them show up only by alt+click the Ps icon on the dock, a trick I discovered only after reading of someone else having the same issue.

I'm as well on a MBP 16'' M1 Max. macOS Monterey 12.3.1 and Photoshop updated to the latest version. I encountered the same behaviour in the previous Ps version too. I work with an external monitor UsbC to HDMI.

I tried restoring the preferences and switching/unplugging the external monitor, but the issue is still present.

To reiterate, the issue is the same as this other ticket https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/popup-window-invisible-ps-23-1-1-mac-m1-max/td-p/12708346.
