Update to Photoshop 20.0.7. The file extension is now hidden by default but will automatically match the format selected in the Format pop-up.

If you've accidentally saved a file with the wrong extension, see this document for how to determine the true file type and rename it: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/determine-the-file-type-of-a-document.html

The issue is resolved with the update that was released today. Force ‘check for updates’ in the CC app if you do not see that update.

They are aware of the problem and are working on it, but it apparently is not that easy to resolve.  Who would have predicted that updating to Catalina would knock out that feature?  Have patience and I'm sure they will resolve the issue as soon as they can get to the root of the problem.  HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Maybe a little solution: It is interressant: The file type changing working when running Photoshop Action convert to...  under the Bridge Image Processor (Catalina and PS 20.0.6)

I found 2 solutions: 1. Change  MANUALLY the file extension before saving or in the saved file. 2. Use Export instead of Save as
