P: Files with gradient layers created in 22.5.2 look different in 23.0

Hi,

I have recently installed Photoshop 2022 (v23), and I was surprised when I opened my PSD files that were using the gradiant map layer style in the layer stack..

They look different 😞

Indeed, Adobe introduced the Perceptual, Linear and Classic methods. This looks great at a first glance, but the default is 'Perceptual', and 'Classic' is not applied when you open a PSD that contains gradiant map layer styles.

This sound as a bug, because PSD files should retaint the corrections intent of the retoucher.

Please, add the capability to set the default behaviour for thr Gradiant Map Layesr Style in the preference.

Thank you.

But is there any way to set default Method in the Gradient Map to Classic? Gradient Tool remembers last setting and it works with Classic as default, but Gradient Mask (with Layer/New Adjustment Layer or with Image/Adjustments) always "starts" with Perceptual Method.

@Da7 Gradient Map issue is different from Gradient Fills. Covered in this post: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-bugs/p-gradient-map-adjustment-layer-ps-23-is-not-backward-compatible-even-in-classic-method/idi-p/12505807 for anyone else that wants to follow.

According to my tests, Adobe  fixed all my points

1. Previous 23.0 PSD with Gradient Map Layers are in 'Classic' mode.
2. Actions recorded before Photoshop 23 are executed in 'Classic' mode.
3. New Actions are recorded with the method you choose.

Good job 🙂

@Da7 This works for me. A classic gradient layer created in 23.0.1 opens in the prior version without error and looks the same.

What about the other big bug always regarding the gradient map in classic method still not backward compatible? I updated to 23.0.1 and the bug is still there, when I create a gradient map in "classic" method, the gradient won't be read in the previous versions of Photoshop. Please make a fix because it's crucial guarantee a backward compatibility with the classic gradient map.

We are actively working on a fix for the different gradient tool that use interpolation methods and actions. Thank you for bringing this up and I apologize for the inconvenience.

you'll probably need to re-install the previous version as this might not be fixed for weeks...

Yikes. Did they really code this to retro-actively change existing saved grads? Seems like something you would obviously not want to implement in that way...
