P: Helvetica Neue Bold doesn't render spaces under Lion

Loaded up some PSDs that I had created in Snow Leopard after installing Lion and they looked fine... except for one thing. Anywhere that I used Helvetica Neue Bold there were no spaces in between words anymore.

This issue doesn't occur in anything else other than Photoshop (I've actually also seen it in Illustrator). Tried clearly Adobe font cache, multiple times... no dice. It would be very awesome to get a solution on this because it's preventing me from using that font, which is used quite often.

We're currently investigating the problem. It appears to be isolated to CS4 and CS3 and exclusively with the Bolded version of Helvetica Neue. There is no problem if you're running CS5 or CS5.1 or if you're running an earlier version using a different style of Helvetica Neue (such as Bold Italic, Light, Condensed Bold, Regular, etc).

I couldn't help noticing that OS X Lion has 2 different Helvetica Neue on its system. One is called "HelveticaNeue.dfont" and it has 3,4MB (twice the size of the same file on Snow Leopard), the second is called "HelveticaNeueDeskUI.ttc" and it has 1,6MB (about the same size of the Snow Leopard's Helvetica Neue).

Actually I'm reluctant to replace the 3,4MB Lion's Helvetica Neue with the 1,4MB Snow Leopard's Helvetica Neue. Why the sizes are so different?

Also, you could save the original font in case something goes awry.

I'm not sure. I feel like the risk is minimal, since it's the same font, just from Snow Leopard instead of Lion. And who knows, it may be replaced again in a future update.

It's up to you though, of course.

Replacing a system font might cause us future trouble, don't you think?

Folks, I found a solution that worked for me...

Disclaimers:
a) This worked for me, and I’ve only tested it in Photoshop CS4.
b) Backup stuff before you delete, change, or modify anything.

Onto the instructions...

1. You need (I’m assuming) a pre-Lion version of Helvetica Neue.
2. Copy it (Apple+C)
3. Go to /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/
Frameworks/ATS.framework/Versions/A/Resources/ProtectedFonts/
4. Delete HelveticaNeue.dfont from that folder and paste in the replacement (Apple+V)
5. Go to /System/Library/Fonts/
6. Delete HelveticaNeue.dfont from that folder and it should auto-replace itself. If it doesn’t, paste in the replacement again
7. At this point, you should clear out font caches for Photoshop. I use Font Explorer so that makes it easy. You can also use Onyx to do that.
8. Reboot

Good luck!

I wonder what happens if we re-install CS4?

Clarification: I only downloaded the Photoshop trial, not the suite.
