P: Instability and crashes with RTX 4070

Hi, I am experiencing a high level of instability in Photoshop with the program crashing several times per hour of editing. I previously had issues when using an older video card that I described in another post. Since then I have updated to a new video card, a 4070, but am seeing just as many or more crashes but under slightly different circumstances.

I have attached several files to this message including my system information (the full text file and a JPG of the key hardware), a screenshot of my PS Performance Preferences and GPU Compatibility Check, and 3 crash reports . These reports have come while I have been using the latest version of PS (currently 24.5, one crash report is from when 24.4.1 was the latest) and the latest Nvidia Studio Driver (currently 535.98, though my crash report from 5/14 was on the previous driver which may have been more stable). I have installed the latest Windows Updates and BIOS for my motherboard. Although I have 3 crash reports below that I submitted to Adobe, they are actually relatively rare in terms of the crashes. Most the time there is no report, some times I see a pop-up saying there is a solution and it brings me to this link with general troubleshooting. As for my usage that precipitates the crashes, it differs a bit from the crashes I was getting with my 3070 card. With the 3070 I got crashes in both ACR and PS. With the new 4070, I have yet to get a crash in ACR, but I am getting lots of crashes in PS. Usually the crashes come when I am zooming in and out of an image or changing the tool selection on the left side toolbar. I almost always have only a single image open with up to 5 layers; I no longer open multiple images at once because the crashes are so frequent and I lose my work. It never crashes when I am running a plugin (I use the Nik Collection, Topaz, and Exposure X7). My system is otherwise stable and other programs do not present issues. I have re-set my preferences to defaults and then changed them to the current settings in the attachment below, but I don't see a difference. With my 3070, the only way I could prevent crashes was disabling the GPU entirely; enabling the Older GPU Mode (Technology Previews section) did not help. I obviously do not want to disable the GPU entirely as my images don't display as accurately in addition to the performance loss.

At this point I'm starting to pull my hair out, I really need your help! Thank you.

I do have a Corsair TX850M power supply which I believe should be more than enough.

And I connected a PCCI-e 6+2 cable which only serves the graphics card.

That said I still have the impression it is a power issue - meaning that sometimes for some reasons the system is starved for power.

One more thing: your power supply. The RTX needs a whole lot more than the Quadro.  The specs say minimum 650 watts (but more probably doesn't hurt).

How did you connect the 8-pin ATX power cable? The Quadro didn't need that. Is there a permanent outlet from your power supply, or did you need to get a new cable?

I've seen a few people having problems with 535.98. Try going back to 531.65 (which is the one I'm using without any problems).

Check "clean install" to remove all traces of the old driver, and don't install any of the extra components in the driver package! You don't need them.

I got myself an RTX4070 last week and I am seeing such issues. I have not done any serious p[hotoshop use yet but I have occasional total freezes when the graphics card gets stressed. Just a few mins ago it was while just scrolling in Bridge. It has happened in PS and in other applicatios which use 3D engines.

My system is on Windows 10, with an Intel i7 9700K, 32GB Ram on an ASROCK Z390 extree4 motherboard. Nvidia Studio Driver. 535.98

Before this crad I have been working for years with a Quadro K2200 and never saw such a problem!

I read somewhere about the issue being corrected with a change on the motherbnoard settings on how the voltages are handled (setting thw loadline calibration to a more generous setting). It maybe that the graphics processor cannot get all the power it wants and that produces such a total freeze of the system.

Maybe it can be fixed via a new driver but he fact you had such issues with a 3070 is certainly very discouraging.

Try going to ACR preferences in Photoshop (Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw > File Handling and disable support for opening JPEG and HEIC files. Then restart your system. Does that help?

I start with the raw files in ACR, usually .ARW (Sony) or .CR3 (Canon). I edit at 16 bits in Adobe RGB color space and maintain that when editing in PS. I get the crashes with these files, either they are still in the raw format or saved as a .PSD. I only export to an 8-bit JPEG as a final step.

What's your workflow look like from ACR > PS? What's the bit-depth and color space for the files sent to PS?

I think there's a problem with the recent Geforce GPUs and the latest Nvidia drivers. If I disable the graphics processor I don't have any problem, otherwise I crash every 2 minutes.
