P: New 23.3 update bug exposure with mask in 32 bit

So. I update today. I have simple action which I have been using for many years to supress highlights -

  • in 32-bit image create ajustment layer "exposure"
  • Apply image to mask of this layer
  • Apply exposure to the mask (gamma correction) to separate dark and light in the mask
  • Feather mask
  • modify in exposure layer option "exposure" to -0.3

And now in 23.3 all highlights turn to BLACK SPOTS

Again - i have simple exposure layer with mask, in this layer i change only "exposure" to -0.3 and this turn white color to the black! what [removed]? It breaks all logic.

А back to 23.2 and here all works fine.

Windows 10 with latest updates.

Hi @Alexfmos2 I tried generating the mask with the steps you provided in our beta version, but I don't get the same mask result as you do. I have a recording attached.  There are a few other suggestions I have.  I suggest disabling Preferences -> Performance -> Multithreaded Compositing and restarting Photoshop.

Like i said before -

  • create layer "exposure"
  • "apply image" to the mask
  • apply to mask adjustment "exposure" with change only one slider - gamma to 0.1
  • change value in layer "exposure"

I had a similar issue, plugin for extraction worked fine in 23.2, then in 23.3 results were 'baked', as in all layers on the result were completely white.  Turns out some work the plugin does, like masking and such, was moved to the graphics card between 23.2 and 23.3.  The laptop is older, with integrated graphics card, and apparently has some bug.  I changed the setting under Edit->Preferences->Performance->Graphics Processor Settings->Advanced and unchecked 'GPU compositing', per the advice in other threads, and that resolved my issue.

Yours sounds just similar enough that it may be worth a try if you update to 23.3 again sometime soon.

Got it. Can you confirm the steps or the action to create the mask?

Yes, because mask was created in 23.3. White color in this mask has wrong value, in numbers. After the mask has been created with this value, file can be opened in any version, it's baked. The problem is  - that these wrong values are only created in 23.3.

@Alexfmos2 Hmm. There have been no changes in this area of Photoshop. With your file I see the same behavior in 22.x, 21.x 20.x versions of Photoshop. I even went back and installed 23.2:

I know that. But it's not a solution. First - i can't record this in action, to many problems, Second - in 23.2 this works fine (like i said many times).

The mask contains 32-bit data so the effect is getting multiplied by that. Workaround: Option click the mask. Select all. New 8-bit document. Paste the mask. Copy the mask. Go back to the 32-bit doc. Paste the 8-bit mask. Option click the mask. Should look correct now.

I think it's a problem not a single psd file, i guess it's a bag of version of photoshop, because 23.2 work fine. But if you ask, i create a simple file in CC or google where the problem is visible. Note the fact - this problem only exists if mask of layer "exposure" was edited with gamma correction or other adjustments. With brush on the mask problem not exist.
