I've just downloaded the new photoshop update (22.01) and I noticed there is no classic red area when you change Brush size and feathering (when using keyboard shortcut OPTION+CONTROL).

it is quite frustrating

I Don't understand how i still have the problem after all updates, i even tried CC2018 and it's there also.

I made some changes in system language though while doing other stuff, could it be a factor? can't see correlation. But it's about at that time i noticed the hardness HUD had turned into opacity and red circle gone. Now, the basic brushes seem to work with the red circle and all that, but if i choose custom brush, it's all opacity and no red circle.

I even tried to make a new brush thinking if i went through all the trouble making every brush from scratch but no, no red circle with them either.

I'm thinking about reinstalling the whole Windows but it worries me as i see people complaining from Apple side also that it would be just lots of unnecessary work for nothing. Graphic card is updated, tried earlier versions, but to no avail.
This is f***king nuts it just changed into this with no logical reason.

Photoshop version 22.1.1  fixes the red brush preview for good.

Indeed I have the same problem : there is no way to visually adjust size and feathering for brush and other tools (the red area has disappeared).

I had to stop updating and remain with version 22.0.0 (although even in this version, the red area disappears after some copy/paste actions).

Is there no way of getting this useful function back ???

I have updated to Ps 22.1.1 running on win10 20H2, OS Build 19042.685. The red preview works correctly for me; adjusting brush Hardness and and Size as expected. Opacity can be set with the number keys or in the UI as before.

Andor's answer is the correct one, this behavior can be changed in the Tools preferences.

Preferences/Tools/ Vary Round Brush Hardness based on HUD vertical movement. Check this box and it will fix your brush to work the way you and everybody else (IMHO) work prefer it to work.

The red overlay preview has been fixed, but the tool's function is still incorrect. Controls should include brush SIZE and brush HARDNESS – HARDNESS has been replaced by OPACITY, which is completely useless, as opacity can already be effortlessly controlled using the number keys. Interactive control over brush HARDNESS is essential. I have not been able to find a setting or preference to change this feature.

I am running Big Sur.  Just updated my OS about two weeks ago.  I tried the CMD+OPT+R and no 22.1.1 version has shown up.   I have the GPU check as well.

@wkill6816 - Make sure Use Graphics Processor is enabled. It won't show if that's unchecked.

You don't say what OS you are running. If Win 10, close all your Adobe apps and then reset the Adobe CC app by opening it up and typing Ctrl+Alt+R. This will reset Adobe CC and all of its supporting functions. That may get the update to appear.

For the Mac, the key sequence is Cmd+Opt+R.

Hope this helps.
