P: Object Selection very slow response Photoshop 23.5

Current latest PS version is 23.5

And Object Selection is really slow.

It wasn't like this until the early version of PS 2022, but it's getting slower and at 23.5, it's really weirdly slow.

I thought there might be a speed difference between turning on and off the option, so I compared it, but the results were the same.

Precise previews for 16bit document on/off

Native canvas on/off

Multithread compositing on/off

Use Graphic Processor on/off

Image Processing- Select Subject(Device , Cloud) : I don't know if this affects object selection, but I tried changing options.

The size of the test image below is really small. 1000px x 667px (sRGB, 8bit document)

The reason why I tested it with a small image was because I thought it was because of the large image and the number of layers.

But if you look at the gif image below, you can see a huge difference in loading and speed

This is Photoshop 23.5's object selection.

Even though the end is cut to meet the gif capacity, the loading time in front is long. Once again, the test image is very small.

And Now this is Photoshop 21.0.3's object selection. you can check this...

Can you see the difference? It's a big difference.

This is the difference in speed that appears even though the image used in the test is really small.
In the actual working image (6000x8000px), there is a loading as if the computer had stopped a little bit.
It's the same if you try to select a very small, very simple part of a real image, not a lot of it.

This needs to be improved Speed or delay. In fact, the masking quality of those two images was almost the same.

This should be fixed in Photoshop 2023 (version 24.0)

New PS 2023(24.0) realeased. And Faster than PS2022(23.5-23.51). And So far, no existing crashes seem to occur. (btw, My driver is Studio_driver 517.40)
Now that the big problem that has been bothering us for nearly a year has been solved, we can use the object selection tools. Now it would be perfect if it could be as fast as the conventional object selection tool. (Best example is 21.0.3)

I installed and compared ObjectSelectionTool speed and Quality - Photoshop 2020 to 2021, and 2022. And also beta 24.0
What I felt for sure was that even if I chose the beta version of selection processing "faster", it was slower than 2020. I wonder why the latest version is slower.
Honestly, the quality of the selection was not much different between 2020 and 2021.
2022 and Beta24.0 certainly seem to have improved. But still the need some Refine for each selection was inevitable (too rough edge or inaccurate)

And the interesting thing is that I expected to get the same result even though it was slow when I used 23.5 or beta Cpu treatment. However, despite frequent loading and slow speed, I felt that the quality was poor or that I did not recognize the part I wanted.
The difference was different from picture to picture, but in severe cases, if the fast option is the most advanced 2022 Select Subject quality, the More Stable feels like the quality when Select Subject was first introduced in 2018.
(Of course I'm talking about object selection tool. This is just an example of what I felt.)
Many people haven't used this tool properly for a long time, and I think it'll only be possible to use it properly in 2023, not Photoshop 2022, but I hope it's more optimized in beta and released.
The first release of each year was always buggy, so it's also true that I'm looking forward to it and worried about it.
Anyway... I hope to use 2023 Photoshop as an official release as soon as possible.

Hi @Yukie Takahashi, your detailed response is great to have, thank you so much. Photoshop provides several ways to make selections, and we all have our own workflows. Adapting is not always easy, but this extra information helps us make any necessary transitions. As post author @Jqqerry notes, “I think it was the speed of 21.0.3 that made users feel that feedback was made in almost real time while using the object selection tool.” Indeed, this is the heartfelt loss we are experiencing and a legacy measure that will hang in the balance.

Hi @Heather26345798hlky, I'm sorry to hear about the crashing you are having with printing. It would be terrific if you could start a separate post here in the Photoshop forum for your particular issues. This thread is now very long and coming to a close with solutions that are specific to crashing around the Object Selection Tool and an update to the NVIDIA Studio driver.

Even if these are among your problems, I'm worried your other concerns will be lost in this forum. Please start here to open a new post. Please include the exact version release and Operating System you are using (i.e., Windows 10; Photoshop 23.5.1) so we can better assist you. You mentioned several troubleshooting steps that haven't helped you so far. Have you been able to submit crash reports with your email address during the events? Did you update your drivers? Reset your preferences? One more step is to go to Help > System Info and copy and paste the text into your post, so we can better analyze your working environment. Thank you!

Since this update it is not only slow but it crashes, prints the wrong size no matter what you do. It will freeze half the time and I will lose what I am working on. It is very frustrating as it is costing me money and time.

The support person could not help me. My prints print fine on other apps it is just photoshop and it started just two days ago right after it updated.

We even tried a root account and still had the same issues. All my settings are right. We Uninstaller and reinstalled, but nothing changed.

@Yukie Takahashi It was the first time I saw the Adobe community collecting opinions and questions from many people and answering them like this.
Thank you very much for your kind and detailed reply.
Most of the contents were understood based on Adobe's future purpose and direction of development.

However, I would like to add an opinion on the last part, "There is a difference in speed compared to the previous year's version(2020 or 2021)."
Other people don't know how to use it, but I don't use object finder. Set the overlay of the object finder to always manual/off.

So it's the same as the previous object selection tool, but I'm talking about the speed difference when you try to choose something.   <<< I think that this means what others say, "The object selection tool of 23.0~23.4.2 is also a lot of speed difference from last year's Photoshop."

Obviously, I understand that the algorithm of the object selection tool has changed and has become more detailed, so the processing time has to be increased accordingly
I think it was the speed of 21.0.3 that made users feel that feedback was made in almost real time while using the object selection tool.

So if it's inevitably a little slow depending on the algorithm, I'd like to tell you that even if you use more CPU and GPU resources in the future, you can ultimately have a smooth and satisfying experience if you set the target for real-time processing speed and feedback as in version 21.0.3.

Thank you again for your reply. I'll be looking forward to it.

Jqqerry, J E L, kevafef, cifil and other valuable Photoshop users,

Here are some Q & A based on a recent forum questions.

Q1) Is the Windows crash on Object Selection Tool and Select Subject solved by the NVIDIA new driver?

A: Yes, see this link: Re: P: Photoshop 23.0.2 Crashes when working with paths - Windows

Q2) Are we going to keep Preferences > Image Processing > Selections Processing options even though NVIDIA’s new driver will fix the crash? Why?

A: Yes.

Reasons: We will keep the option because at any time, a GPU vendor or OS could release an update that breaks our software and it would be totally outside of our control. And this option could help users.

This is because machine learning is not a mature technology and is constantly evolving, with researchers discovering better and faster ways of doing some of the things we want to do. As we attempt to add more “smarts” to Photoshop to make people’s day-to-day workflows easier, there’s always the risk that the technology isn’t supported correctly by the operating system or the hardware drivers.

Q3) What is the difference between Preferences > Image Processing > 'Select Subject Processing' and 'Selections Processing' in the current Photoshop Beta Prime?

A: For the Nvidia driver-related crash or slowness on Object Selection Tool and Select Subject, you can use the ‘Selections Processing’ option from the current Beta Prime. Of course. The best way is to update your Nvidia drivers.

‘Select Subject Processing’ is specific to Select Subject only and allows you to choose how this task is processed (on device or cloud processing). As stated in the preferences, processing on your device is usually faster, but using cloud processing may give you more detailed results.

  • If you are connected to the network, take advantage of using the ‘Cloud (Detailed results)’ option. Usually, you’ll get a better result.
  • If you are not connected to the network or you need to get the result quicker, use the ‘Device (Quicker results)’ option.

Q4) Even though using the ‘Faster’ option in preferences or updating to the new NVIDIA driver, it seems like Object Selection Tool is slower than the 2020 - 2021 version.

A: Old Object Selection Tools have less functionality. It’s a trade-off of having more functionality vs. speed.

If you really want to go back to the old Object Selection Tool, you can just use Object Selection Tool > Mode: Rectangle or Lasso. (Additionally, you can set the gear icon menu > Object Finder Mode: Manual Refresh, Never Show Overlay if you prefer)

Thank you, @Jqqerry, I also appreciate your continued help with getting this issue sorted out to everyone's satisfaction.

I see now with the latest Beta (24.0) that there is another choice in Preferences, Selections Processing, along with Select Subject Processing, which is already included in 23.5.1. What is the primary difference between “Selections” and “Select Subject” when it comes to performing a selection? Because I can't detect any difference in terms of speed with any combination of settings when testing both public and Beta versions.

The primary question is about returning the original speed of the Object Selection Tool, in either Rectangle or Lasso Mode, and without Object Finder checked.

Crashing is another issue. I have not experienced any crashing with the tool as others have reported. Overall, I think your assessment is correct: the Quicker/More Stable option was created while waiting for the NVIDIA Studio driver update. The slowness showed up at 23.5 or perhaps earlier. These new setting options don't make selections any faster; they only provide stability for those who experienced crashes with the old driver.

Now that the driver is released to fix crashing, when will Adobe restore the speed as experienced using 21.0.3? I imagine there is much more being sorted out beyond this seemingly simple fix. Some hope the next public release will bring the speed back, but we don't have confirmation of that yet. Stay tuned!

There are two things that I thought about when I tried to run the new Photoshop beta(24.0) in Adobe Creative Cloud. I keep using Photoshop 2020 and Photoshop 2021/2022 is being maintained because I couldn't use it because of the bug. So I compared it.

A. Even if I choose the Fast option, it is slower than the speed of Photoshop 2020. Because the algorithms are different, the results of masking are slightly different. But it's still an unwelcome pace.

B. I would like to know the reason why Fast option was created for the same reason as "A".
It's not fast, and it doesn't use much of my computer's resources. I'm using 3090ti but I don't feel the acceleration at all as much as I pay for it. And I want to use a fast, stable, and finished object selection tool.
I'm still staying in the 2020 version for reasons such as incomplete, slow, and unstable, but if I have to "choose" something this fast, I don't think I'll use the latest version in the future.
If you remove that option and just add the 2020 version of object selection tool, I will happily use the 2022 version.
