P: Object Selection very slow response Photoshop 23.5

Current latest PS version is 23.5

And Object Selection is really slow.

It wasn't like this until the early version of PS 2022, but it's getting slower and at 23.5, it's really weirdly slow.

I thought there might be a speed difference between turning on and off the option, so I compared it, but the results were the same.

Precise previews for 16bit document on/off

Native canvas on/off

Multithread compositing on/off

Use Graphic Processor on/off

Image Processing- Select Subject(Device , Cloud) : I don't know if this affects object selection, but I tried changing options.

The size of the test image below is really small. 1000px x 667px (sRGB, 8bit document)

The reason why I tested it with a small image was because I thought it was because of the large image and the number of layers.

But if you look at the gif image below, you can see a huge difference in loading and speed

This is Photoshop 23.5's object selection.

Even though the end is cut to meet the gif capacity, the loading time in front is long. Once again, the test image is very small.

And Now this is Photoshop 21.0.3's object selection. you can check this...

Can you see the difference? It's a big difference.

This is the difference in speed that appears even though the image used in the test is really small.
In the actual working image (6000x8000px), there is a loading as if the computer had stopped a little bit.
It's the same if you try to select a very small, very simple part of a real image, not a lot of it.

This needs to be improved Speed or delay. In fact, the masking quality of those two images was almost the same.

@J E L  Hi J E L, Thank you for your continued interest in this matter and for sharing your experience.
Did you tried Beta 23.5 or Beta 24.0?
Device vs Cloud   ------ This is about "Select Subject".
And In Beta version, can check new thing for Selection.
Fast vs Stable ------ This is about "Object Selection Tool" (I don't know if that also affects the speed of the object finder. Because I don't use it)

Fast -- 23.0~23.4.2's ObjectSelectionTool which is GPU mode.
Stalbe -- 23.5~23.5.1's ObjectSelectionTool which is CPU mode.

That option was created because Nvidia's studio driver release was delayed, allowing users to choose and change CPU or GPU processing within Photoshop.

However, 517.40 drivers have now been released to resolve crashes, and Adobe officials have recommended updating the Nvidia driver to 517.40 for all threads related to crashes (bug tabs/discussion tabs) that occur when using the SelectSubject/ObjectSelectionTool.

If so, why should I have that option when I don't have to do it temporarily with the CPU?
I also appreciate your opinion and support.

What do you think?

@Yukie Takahashi Thanks for reply.
But We still don't understand. The main idea of the option to choose a feature (Fast/stable) from beta 23.5 is whether to use the GPU as it is in the event of a crash or avoid a crash even if it is running at a slow speed using a CPU.
As everyone knows, Nvidia released the 517.40 studio driver shortly after Nvidia Beyond ended. And if you look at the release of the driver, it says it solves the Photoshop crash.
So if the crash is resolved at the driver level, is there any reason to leave the option of disabling the GPU(Fast) in the software and temporarily processing it with the CPU(Stable)?
If you had to leave the option like that, why did Photoshop 2021 and Photoshop 2020's ObjectSelectionTool work well regardless of the driver version without that option?
And even if use the beta version of Fast option, it's much slower than 2020(21.0.3).

I know that Adobe's developers are having a hard. And thank you for that.
But this is a problem that is linked to a crash that started with the 23.0 release, and eventually the speed was messed up to temporarily resolve the crash, and this is the official I know.
I posted this thread in August, but the seriousness of the problems people experience and feel is that it has already been going on since around November last year. It's a year in a month.
Many people react unfairly, angry, or somewhat sensitively, passionately because they haven't been able to use the tools properly for a year.
So, as a result, I don't know why the Fast/Stable option still exists, contrary to what took more than a year, and what people wanted from a year ago is to want an object selection tool in 2021 or 2020, where Fast and stable coexist. I think fast is something that needs to be upgraded, strengthened and optimized, and naturally accelerated. It's natural to be stable. People don't want to choose, and it's not a consideration (at least until 2020 and 2021)
I know you're having a hard time ahead of the 24.0 release, but I want you to know more clearly what many people want and reflect it in the update.

Hi @Yukie Takahashi, thank you for the update. Just to clarify, I'm running the 23.5.1 Release (Windows 10) and already have the option to select Device (Quicker results) or Cloud (Detailed results) in Preferences and on the toolbar. Is there something in the Photoshop (Beta) version that is different? Even with the latest NVIDIA Studio driver installed, Quick Selection is slower than previous Releases and there is very little difference seen whether selecting Quicker or Detailed.

I believe the OP and others replying are wondering if and when we can return to 21.0.3's Object Selection speed WITHOUT having to choose between the two. In other words, if it worked before, what has changed so that it now requires ticking either Device (GPU) or Cloud? Is your goal to gain more object selection learning through users who select the Cloud option? Again, we appreciate any clarification.

After installing beta 24.0, two questions arose.

First, I don't know why that option is. Can't we just fix it with a fast one? Has the GPU problem not been solved?
Or if the GPU issue occurs again in the future, do you have an option for the user to selectively process the CPU?
I don't understand. Then why did Photoshop 2021 and Photoshop 2020 work well without that option?

Secondly, do I really have to wait until the release of 24.0?
Then, all versions from 23.0 to 23.5.1 have object selection tool not working properly with or without driver updates, so I don't know why I don't release 23.5.2 urgently after Nvidia driver is released. And we've confirmed that the beta is working, but the beta is not available for actual retouching. It's unstable...

Then when will 24.0 be released? We need more information on this.

Thanks for your patience!

Until we have a chance to include the Preferences > Image Processing in the release version, you can install the Photoshop Beta version from Creative Cloud > Beta apps > Photoshop (Beta) to improve the slowness. You can install Photoshop (Beta) version side by side with your existing release version of photoshop. In Photoshop (Beta), go to Preferences > Image Processing. Use Selections Processing: ‘Faster’

(You will need to restart Photoshop to see the changes).

And if you are experiencing a crash on using the Object Selection Tool or Select Subject on Windows, please update the Nvidia Graphics drivers to the latest version, which came out recently, and let us know if that helps to resolve the crash issue. For steps, see this:https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/known-issues.html#app-crash-with-tools

I experienced a slow or delay? loading in the object selection tool from version 23.5, and I bought a Radeon GPU because I saw many articles about issues with Nvidia.
But it's not solved at all. what the...................

And the reason I thought about that is because at the entrance to the office, there's another old desktop that you use to make simple documents, and this computer's GPU is very old.
If I remember correctly, it would be the gtx750 series. But when I use the object selection tool, there is no difference in speed from my work desktop.

Not only Nvidia but also other companies' GPUs seem to be affected.
I have two desktops, each equipped with an Nvidia RTX3090 and a Radeon 6900XT, and the same delay occurs in Photoshop. My Photoshop version is 23.5.1
It just seems that the GPU itself does not work at all now regardless of the GPU company when using the Object Selection tool.

Are you sure it won't be fixed in September? So sad news...

I don't think people are simply complaining or angry that the objectselection tool isn't working properly.
At least for NVIDIA users to be aware of in advance, it would have been nice to inform them that if there are many problems in the Photoshop realease page or the Creative Cloud introduction section in advance, certain features may not be available, crash, or slow down.
I simply watched promotional videos or promotional posts and installed the latest version of Photoshop, but I said, "That function doesn't work well on my computer It's weird." Most people turn it over. And the only people who can't stand it and complain or report bugs like this to let others know about it and want it fixed as soon as possible are those who report to this thread or see the thread.
Nevertheless, it is the most active bug thread recently reported.
At least how it is going, and if the issue with Nvidia has now been resolved, when will the next release be updated? If the minimum disclosure of information is made, many people's anxiety, complaints, worries, and prejudices will be resolved, but it seems that everyone is tired now that the wait without a promise has been a year.
