P: Opening pdf - colour mode seems completely random

In my workflow I have to open pdf files in Photoshop. When the popup window asks a spec for size and resolution it always used to keep whichever colour MODE was last used.
Since a recent update it now seems to choose one completely at random - regardless of whether the pdf is RGB or CMYK or Grayscale.
I ALWAYS need to open these in CMYK Mode (that is, in fact, the point of the exercise). Why does it go to a random choice? Why has it changed from holding its previous value.
Resolution holds its previous value - please correct the Mode to do the same, just as it always used to.

I'm having a similar issue, but it's not random. Photoshop maintains RGB Color as default Mode until I open a PDF which changes the Mode to an option which doesn't normally exist: sRGB IEC61966-2.1.

Next time I open a PDF, Mode is now Grayscale; even for PDFs I previously opened as RGB.

Can Mode be set to always open as RGB unless I specifically change it?

To save time, I'd rather always open PDF as RGB and change to Grayscale or anything later, inside Photoshop, if needed, instead of having to keep clicking the Mode options when opening a PDF.

Repro steps:
1) Take several pdf files and drag and drop in in PS
2) On the first file select colour "Mode: RGB Color"
3) Click OK to import.
4) On the next PDF the Mode will have Switches to Lab
5) On subsequent PDF it will then stay in RGB mode.

PROBLEM SOLVED

It turns out that the problem is only this:
I have, for the particular workflow that I operate, always had colour management set to OFF in my Preferences. This has been the case for several years and I had forgotten all about it until Eric's long reply above.

A recent update of Photoshop did not fully apply all preferences and settings - I recall there was an upgrade some time in the latter part of last year which destroyed my Interface Prefs and my Scratch Disk prefs, but did not alter my Tool Prefs.

It seems almost certain that at the same time it re-set my colour management settings to Adobe's default (I didn't change it).

Now that I have re-set my preference to where it always was - the problem stops.

Thanks Eric - I will look into this as soon as time allows. It certainly looks like it might be the same issue.
My main problem with these sort of issues is when they suddenly manifest themselves. Recent updates of Photoshop have not behaved well at keeping user preferences - which may possibly be why it has suddenly appeared.
I will follow this up with tests as soon as I am able.

I believe I have reproduced this issue. The problem appears to be the last used (or commonly called “sticky") value is not getting set if you select one of the profiles provided by Photoshop ('RGB Color', 'CMYK Color', etc) when opening PDF pages with embedded color profiles. This appears to have started in CC 2015.5. I will be logging a bug for this.

If you open the same page in the same PDF multiple times in a row, the Mode field changes? I am not seeing this behavior.

Example of what I am seeing:

Let's say the initial value of the Mode field is 'RGB Color'.

1. Open a PDF that has an embedded color profile of 'sRGB IEC61966-2.1'. I change it to the built-in 'CMYK Color' profile and open it.
2. Open a PDF that does not have an embedded color profile, the Mode field will be 'RGB Color' due to the bug - the sticky value did not get set. You change it here to 'CMYK Color'
3. Open a PDF that does not have an embedded color profile again and it will have the sticky value (CMYK Color) from the previous step since the PDF did not have an embedded color profile and the bug did not get triggered. Now the Mode field is the expected sticky value.

Other observations:

When a page's content does not have an embedded profile, this value will use the current "sticky" value. Otherwise, if the page has an embedded profile, that profile is always the default value in the Mode field, and each page can have different profiles (or none) depending on the content. It has been this way since at least CS6. I suspect this is designed behavior but will ask a PDF expert (I am not one).

When selecting multiple pages, the profile of the left-most selected page that has an embedded profile will be displayed in the Mode field. Once opened, each page does have the correct profile. I see the same behavior as far back as CS6 and suspect this is as designed. As an example let’s say you have four pages with the following profiles: “None”, Apple RGB, U.S Web Coated (SWOP) v2, sRGB IEC61966-2.1. If you select all pages, Apple RGB will appear in the Mode field. If you select the last two pages, U.S Web Coated (SWOP) v2 will appear in the Mode field.

Please let us know if this matches what you are seeing.

Weird. I am still not able to reproduce. I created a multi-page PDF in sRGB.

1. I open it, mode is sRGB in the Import PDF dialog
2. I change the mode to CMYK and open it
3. Close the file
4. Reopen it

It's always opens as sRGB.

Am I missing a step? I'm on macOS 10.12.6
