P: Program error when saving, lag when zooming, changes not reflecting in document window (macOS)

Since the 22.1 update, MAJOR bugs:

- ‘could not save because of a program error’ when saving, work around: hiding a few layers or folders.

- major lag when zooming in

- actions and changes delay in showing, to the point where they never show up - once I close the document and quit Photoshop and go back in the changes are  visible.

what’s going on??

I had the same issue and I couldn't find a way to save it as a psd but I found a way to save it as jpg.. Like this you can save your layers as jpg and it would be much easier to make it again when you reopen photoshop.. So I just press flatten image and then I drug and drop the solid image to my notes and from there I safe it on my desktop copy paste.. 🙂

No, Photoshop doesn't really run out of memory - it just goes to the scratch disk and slows down. More likely there was something unexpected in the document that caused the error (like a mask that's over 30k pixels tall or wide).

Also, if in doubt, try the Large Document format: which can save larger documents.

I worked on A2 size 300ppi with lots of layers. Then I couldn't save my file! I thought I would have to do a reworking. But thanks for the solution posted here! Changing 8 bit mode to 16 bit really helps!

But I'm still curious, I used PS CS6 for years without this kind of error. Is it because of the heavy work that eats up lot of memory?

I "upgraded" a month or so ago from CC to 2015 - that was a disaster, so uninstalled then went to CC 2014 which I read was "stable" - however, the thing KEEPS sticking with the "cannot complete error", so I'm saving schtuff all the time manuially as I dont trust it - Adobe really need to fix this as its ridiculous - as for OS etc., it ain't my box, 32GB 250gb SSD 2TB HDD "spare 1GB video card", i7, Win 7 Pro etc.....

Hi Sofia,

You can find the 16 bit / 8 bit options under Menu Bar > Image > Mode.

Hope that helps, Josh

Ok, so i took a risky chance and pressed the "close file" button (red ball on mac) hoping it would advise to either cancel, save or dismiss changes.

It asked me to do so, and pressed SAVE CHANGES. It did save all the changes on the file. But please, anyone else have a permanent solution for this without having to take the risk?

- Can't find the 16bit / 8 bit choice
- my plugin options are unselected

Thanks!!!

Hmm, a low level error in the VM system -- no idea what would cause that.
