Issue: Photoshop doesn’t recognize preferred unit when making new guides

  • Adobe Photoshop Version: 27.4.0 20260218.r.15 6bd4063  x64 (final, Release)
  • Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit
  • Version: 10 10.0.19045.6466

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Edit → Preferences → Units & Rulers... → Units → Rulers → Inches
  2. View → Guides → New Guide...
  3. On Position, put 5.4 or 5.4”
  4. OK

Expected result: Photoshop should create a new guide on 5.4 inches

Actual result: Photoshop creates a new guide on 5.4px

What happens before: Before the update, it created a guide on 5.4 inches even if I simply put 5.4 or 5.4”

Temporary fix: I needed to put the inches unit for it to recognize, such that 5.4in

@Mattia Falzarano try disabling this option in the preferences and restarting Photoshop to see if it helps

@Mattia+Falzarano the modern UI is a bit buggy at the moment and more of a beta option, and that’s why it’s in the technology previews section

After the last update in the office we are all having problems with setting origins of guides and creating them setting the measurement.

When you create a new guide even if you moved the origin the placement start anyway from the original “zero” point. Making impossible to create layouts and accureted placements of elements in a confortable way.

Thank you for the attention

@JackVag seems like a bug, I can replicate the issue, as a workaround disable this option in the preferences and restart Photoshop, a lot of bugs have been introduced with this new feature enabled.

I hadn’t known about this bug, big thanks for the tip, Ged.

When unchecking the Enable Modern User Interface, Ps states that the change would take affect after Ps restart. Not so, it took effect immediately.

why does not photoshop follow the new zero point when asking for a new vertical guide line. I have been searching for answeers and it seems as if that never was ment to work - but i have been working like that for years til now when updated system and photoshop, So I drag the zeropoint of the rulers to a new location of my document. That point is now zero on the rulers - but when I ask Photoshop to make a new vertical guideline 20 mm to the right from that point it makes it 20 mm from the beginning of document, the old zero-point. What am I doing wrong?

@Rudy CH Change this in your Photoshop Preferences, Command K on a MAC, or Control K for a PC

Unit & Rulers - Rulers - Inches

Thanks for the response. I never changed my settings; they were always set to In. After the upgrade, they changed the design of the requester window for canvas size, and now it always opens in pixels. I can change it, but it’s an extra step. In preferences, my window looks a little different from yours, but it’s still set to In.

@Rudy CH make sure you have no open documents. After an update or upgrade, it will likely be set as the factory reset, in this case pixels because Photoshop is pixel perfect app!

I have always been taught 30 years ago to set your preferences before opening any documents... The old saying is that if you do this on an open document, the setting is just for that document. So, that's how I always set it up.

The canvas size window now always opens with dimensions in pixels. How can I set it to display inches by default?

Hey, @hkse! Thanks for the detailed report. I can reproduce this as described. I've logged this for the team to review. Please use @Jeff Arola’s instructions to temporarily disable the new UI panel.

Thanks!

In Photoshop go to Edit>Preferences>Technology Previews, uncheck Enable Modern User Interface, restart Photoshop and see if that corrects the issue with the New Guide dialog.
