P: PS v26.1 "Import video to layers" not usable any more with ProRes (4444, 422)

The "import video to layers" features is unusable after the latest update.

Since I use this feature all the time this is critical for me!

- i am using a .mov file that has worked before (prores 4444, 10mb, 3seconds)

- clicking ok makes the dialog hang 30 seconds with spinning beach ball

- "Making layers" process takes 7 minutes! It took 7 seconds before!

- the opened layers are all empty

I'm having the same problem. After updating from 2024 to 2026, MOV videos stopped working. Has this issue still not been resolved after all this time?

Hi @hsdaiii

Thank you for reporting this issue. We can confirm that this is a known bug, and our engineering team is actively tracking it. We understand this has been an ongoing issue and appreciate your patience.

Workaround in the meantime:

Please try converting your ProRes .mov files to H.264 or H.265 (.mp4) before importing them into Photoshop. You can use:

  • Adobe Media Encoder — Add the .mov file, set the output format to H.264 at maximum quality, and encode the file.
  • Adobe Premiere Pro — Export the file as an H.264 MP4.

Also, make sure to close all Adobe applications and background processes before retrying.

Let us know if this helps!

“Could not import the clipboard because your computer does not provide the required AVX and AVX2 instruction sets needed to process video.”

I try to open a .mp4 file in Photoshop 27.6.0 and get the above error. My Mac Studio is from 2022 with an Apple M1 Max chip. I’ve never gotten this error before until I downloaded the latest PS update.

Hi @luchababe, Let’s try a few things to get you back to working.

  1. Disable GPU Acceleration:

    • Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance.
    • Uncheck the option for Use Graphics Processor.
    • Restart Photoshop and check if the issue persists.
  2. Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure that your graphics drivers are up to date.

  3. Try different clips, codecs, and see if it’s all videos or just particular videos.
  4. Try manually resetting your Photoshop preferences: https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually. Remember to back up your settings before doing the preference reset: https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/photoshop/using/preset-migration.html.

If none of these steps work, we can continue to troubleshoot. I hope this helps! ^CH

ProRes 422HQ and 4444/4444+ won’t playback, only show black, and cause extreme slowdown/lag in Photoshop 2025, and Photoshop 2026. Works great in Photoshop2024.

System Configuration (7970X - BROKEN):

  • AMD Threadripper 7970X (32-core)
  • Dual NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPUs
  • Windows 11 Enterprise, Version 24H2 (Build 26100)
  • HVCI/Memory Integrity: ENABLED (CredentialGuard, HypervisorEnforcedCodeIntegrity running)
  • ASRock TRX50 WS motherboard, BIOS 14.10

System Configuration (3970X - WORKING):

  • AMD Threadripper 3970X (32-core)
  • Single NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPU
  • Windows 11 Enterprise, Version 24H2 (Build 26100)
  • HVCI/Memory Integrity: DISABLED
  • Same NVIDIA drivers on both systems

Behavior:

  • ProRes 4444+ and ProRes 422HQ files: Black frames in PS 2025 & 2026 on 7970X
  • Same files work perfectly in PS 2024 on 7970X
  • Same files work perfectly in PS 2025 & 2026 on 3970X (no HVCI)
  • Same files work perfectly in Adobe Media Encoder on 7970X (with HVCI)
  • MP4 files work fine in all versions on both systems
  • Performance extremely sluggish when ProRes file is open in PS 2025/2026

Troubleshooting Attempted:

  • Disabled GPU acceleration in Photoshop preferences - issue persists
  • Reset Photoshop preferences - issue persists
  • Fresh install of Photoshop 2026 - issue persists
  • Updated motherboard BIOS - issue persists
  • Tested with ProRes files from multiple sources (After Effects, Premiere Pro, Mac) - all show black

Importing a video file (Proress 4444 with alpha) in Photoshop 27.3.1 is broken and results in black content.
Also the application freezes on import, resumes after 1 min, but anytime I try to “scrub” the video timeline it freezes again, and it still doesn’t give me any content i.e. black content. This function has worked as long as video-support was available, unfortunately with the latest update it broke.
Note: H264 files seem to be working.

I have tried this on 2 different versions. The most latest 26.11 and after seeing another post I went on over to 25.7. Neither worked.

I'm on windows 11

.MOV videos I take with my IPhone open fine in PS. The videos I take with my Nikon Z8 will not open. The message is "could not open DSCXXX.MOV because the video file could not be opened.

I tried turning off Use Graphics Processor and restarted PS but that didn't help.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi @thelube! When you get a chance, could you update to the latest version of Photoshop and see if the issue still happens? That’ll help us figure out what’s going on.

Thanks so much!
Alek

Unlike in the past when I have a non compatiable video file, these files are compatible (i had made gifs from them only an hour ago) it acts as though it will open the frames, giving no error message or anything like that but after clicking through nothing appears at all? I can't figure out what's happening.

hey there, I have bee scouting the internet and have not found a solution for this. I just updated to latest PS build 26.6 and it stopped opening .mov files. So much to the point it drags and drags and I have to close PS. I installed a prior version 22.2 and it works fine, like it did before. So something clearly got broken somewhere. Has there been any updates to this issue? Seems to be a bug for sure. im still looking but this is the first most recent place ive found to post.
