P: PS v27.2 & Beta 27.3 Files taking longer to open

Th latest update to stable Photoshop 27.2 is taking ages to open certain files, files that were previouly fine on the last versions

I am on Windows 11, my system is Ryzen, Nvidea and 32 gig

This started in Beta 27.2, where suddenly it would not open files that opened perfectgly fine in the previous version, now it seems that whatever you did in Beta 27.2 you have now added to the latest stable build.

These files vary, one for example is only 35MB, yet takes over 2 mins to load, and files that are 1gig plus that do the same, these files open in seconds in previous version

The only thing I can think/see is something to do with linked files?? The file I mentioned that's 35MB only consists of linked files

Anyone else seen this behaviour with latest Beta and stable versions??

This must have been a fun issue to have over the holiday period 😱

Photoshop Beta 27.4 has finally been released and appears to fix the problem which is hopefully great news.

However the only downside to instaling 27.4 is that it removes the ability to go back to 27.1 meaning that if there are other issues with 27.4 then we have no older version to go back to, why can't we have a longer list of previous versions to reinstall?

Confirming that I've experienced this bug multiple times since updating as well. Just today, my Photoshop (27.2.0) took 28 minutes to open a 121MB PSD that contained 3 artboards with 18 smart objects. Earlier, it showed the same behavior on a seperate file. I'd like to note that it appears once I've opened the files, I can close them and re-open them without a wait.

Hi guys,

I ran into the same issue after that update as well. That day, I was working on a large billboard artwork (+4GB), and the files started taking a long time to open and process smart objects. After rolling back to version 27.1, everything is fast again—the system is flying!

another problem i faced is that i cant drag and drop images into images already opend "getting blue frames and bordes as usually and than just dont import that image

You're missing the point. In trying to pinpoint an issue like this, it's crucial to know the environment the application is running in. No bug exists in a vacuum. A bug isn't a thing; it's an interaction. Some get it, others with a different system don't.

Why would I do that... that would imply its as issue with my computer when its not. It worked just fine on your previous version and you have multiple people here complaining.. thus this is clearly an Adobe issue. Just fix whatever change was made to loading files and you should be good.

PSB and PSD files with linked files and/or smart objects take magnitudes longer to open in Photoshop version 27.2 than in the previous version 26.1. Version 27.2 fills up the scratch disks on a 1tb local drive, while version 26.1 only adds 10s of gb on the local drive.

Example, in Photoshop version 27.2 a 500mb PSB file with 20 smart objects totaling 2gb would then fill over 700gb of the scratch disk and take 20-30 minutes to open. Saving or editing was not an option. In version 26.1, the same file opens in 8-10 seconds.

Hi @John30093608px6z, thank you for reaching out! This issue has been reported, so I am going to merge this with our Primary Thread. The team is investigating. In the meantime, please try these steps:

1. Please make sure that at least 100 GB is free on your primary scratch disk. Clear Photoshop temp files and add a secondary SSD under Preferences > Scratch Disks: https://adobe.ly/4qGezs7

2. Try manually resetting your Photoshop preferences

3. In Preferences > Performance, temporarily disable “Use Graphics Processor” and update GPU drivers if performance improves.

4. If linked assets are used, embed the largest ones and test again.

If you need immediate access, you can roll back to Photoshop 27.1 from the Creative Cloud app under Other Versions. Please also share your System Info (Help > System Info) and confirm whether linked files are on a local SSD or network drive so we can pass this to engineering. Thanks! ^CH

I have this same issue as well.. any psd with a smart object takes consideranly longer to open, showing message "Preparing Smart Object" which didn't happen in previous versions.
