In Photoshop 27.4.0 you can't multiply dimensions with Image->Canvas Size tool. There's an error "A number between 1 and 300000 is required. Closest value insterted."

Division, addition, subtraction are working as before.

An alternative workaround, while waiting for the fix, if you want to keep the modern user interface enabled is to add the multiplying number then insert the *.
So in your example 542 becomes 5422 then on inserting the symbol becomes 542*2

@miguelc79956264 it’s a known issue, as a workaround disable this option in the preferences and restart Photoshop

What does new dialog box for canvas size brings that old one wouldnt have? Now one of the best features got broken, if one needed to duplicate width area was just a matter of adding *2 after the input number, like here in PS21:

    with new dialog box:

I am having this exact same issue. Any resolution yet?

    @justice.gage said, ‘... Any resolution yet? ‘

Read down the thread, to the highlighted post by Sameer. It was only confirmed and logged with the development team 12 hours ago :-)

There are two workarounds while waiting for a fix:
    1. Turn off the modern User Interface in Preferences
    or
    2. Type the numbers then insert the * symbol. So for 2000*2  type 20002 then insert the * to make 2000*2

I use the Canvas Size dialogue box daily, usually to resize my documents from 1024 to 4096 when I’m transitioning from a client preview render to producing a full size render.

Using the classic Canvas Size window I’d go in to the Width box and where it says ‘1024’, I’d type ‘*4’ and go down to the Height box and do the same so my canvas increases 4 times.

Now, using your new Canvas Size window, if I type ‘*’ after the existing entry in the Width box I get an Error showing ‘A number between 1 and 300000 is required. Closes value inserted instead’.

PLEASE get the Canvas Size window reverted back to how it used to be, this change is not helpful in the slightest.

I can reproduce this in both v27.4 and the current beta on Windows 11. v26.11.3 works as expected.

With an image open go to Image Canvas Size, uncheck relative and enter the multiply symbol (*) after the current dimension. The error message described in the first post appears before any value is inserted.

Thanks for the clarification. It might be expected behavior when the input fields are incomplete. This error modal is consistent with other dialogues that have this input field.

Or, I could be blindsided by something here, and there’s more to it? Please feel free to share more details.

    Thanks!

@Sameer K There is no chance to complete the field. As soon as the * is pressed the error appears and the number in the entry box is replaced by 1, so no numbers can be entered after the *.

The only work around I could find was to enter the number first then place the cursor and insert the *. So 2000 becomes 20002 which is then changed to 2000*2

Hey, @pskibniewski2. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I’ll help you figure this out.

I’ve tried this a few times, but +1 to @Semaphoric shared, I couldn’t recreate this.

Here is an older thread that addresses a similar error:

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

    Steps to reproduce bug:

    • Create or open any image
    • Go to Image → Canvas Size…
    • Type asterisk next to dimension (i.e. Width “1000*”)
    • Error appears

“+” or “/” or “-” are working as intended (as in previous versions of Photoshop)

    Windows 11 23H2

Photoshop 27.4.0 Release (with new Canvas Size UI)

1000 of what? px, in, …?

It works okay for me. What’s the image dimensions, and what’s the multiplier?
