P: Unwanted Main Window Resizing in Photoshop CC

When I manually resize the main window in Photoshop CC, and then switch to a different image by clicking on a tab, the window resizes, usually just vertically. Extremely annoying!

How do I make it so that when I manually resize the main window, it stays that size.

Thanks in advance!

I have to check for repeatable steps, but it seems that I also get unwanted windows resizing after cropping, but it is maybe due to the original image being way bigger than before in my workflow. (Photos from a Nikon D3 replaced by a Nikon D850)

I wonder if I would not prefer a fit after a crop.

Thank for working on this, @Matt Fuerch

I think the current behaviour in the application frame is fine...I believe if the new document doesn't fit in the current window it zooms out to fit, otherwise a new document appears at 100% zoom. From the there the user can decide on the zoom level of each document in each tab in that window without altering the size of the window.

My other thought was to have a checkbox in the preferences to maintain the current window resizing behavior if some users like it.

I want to make sure I understand the expectations before implementing a fix. Here is what I have so far:

When documents are opened in a floating window (which could be accomplished via Application Frame OFF, or by manually dragging docked windows to be floating) and with Preference > Workspace > Open Documents as Tabs ON, opening a new document into the tabbed group is causing an unexpected resize of the floating window.

If the above is true, then what would be your expectation in the following cases:

  1.  The newly-opened document is smaller in both pixel width and height at 100% zoom than the existing floating window. Should the new document zoom-in to fill the window dimensions? Or should the document open at 100% zoom and contain blank space around the edges?
  2. The newly-opened document is larger in pixel width and/or height at 100% zoom than the existing floating window. Should the new document zoom-out to fit the window dimensions? Or should the document open at 100% zoom and display only a portion of the document in the floating window?

Thank you for your help!

What happens if you turn off Zoom Resizes Windows in Preferences->Workspace?

And does resetting your workspace help?

I had an odd bug where zooming to 100% would not fill the screen, and finally fixed it by resetting my workspace.

Still an issue on version 23.4.2.  Some on this thread suggest turning on the Application frame and turning off tabs, but for years my preferred settings are the Application frame off and tabs on, and the window didn't resize.  Ideally there would be a preference to turn this resizing behaviour on and off.

Exactly! Same here my preferred settings are working with the application frame disabled and tabs on! Whenever I open a new file it should be opened with the same window size as my current opened file and as tabs, is anyone still following this case?

I convertyed this discussion to a bug report as it seems to impede your workflow.

Try Windows, Application frame. The size of your images may vary but the window frame holding them will stay the same. And still have tabs.

Updated to version 21 and this bug still persists 2 and a half years later.  I prefer to work without the application frame and with tabs, so this is very annoying.  Please fix this, Adobe.

I work without Application Frame and experience similar problem. When I opened a new document the window resize itself. A workaround for me is to turn off the "Open documents in tabs" option in Preference>Workspace.
