P: Vector tool Gradient Fill angle stuck at 0 degrees on MacOS 10.10 Yosemite

Photoshop CC 2014.2.2 Release. I'm having an issue where any new gradient I create defaults to 0o angle, and cannot be changed. I've tried restarting the computer, restarting Photoshop, purging all cache, and changing graphics settings. Nada.

Steps to reproduce:
• File > New
• 500x500px @ 72ppi, RGB 8 bit with Square pixels
• Select Rectangle tool, draw a box shape on-screen
• In options bar at the top, change fill type to gradient
• Gradient defaults to 0o. Any attempts to change result in the angle immediately resetting back to 0o.
• Attempt to double-click thumbnail preview in layers panel to bring up gradient modal. Changing angle here also does nothing.

This is an issue I've noticed intermittently since CS6. It's not always reproducible, and sometimes the issue goes away on its own.

I work one block away from the Adobe office in SF, happy to come in with my computer to show this in person.

Good morning everyone,

I am currently working on the latest Yosemite and Photoshop CC versions, and I still have the same gradient angle issue WITH PATH (not with Alpha mask)

Oddly enough, when I updated from CC to 2014 CC, the issue disappeared for a while. Before it inevitably came back to haunt my workflow!

The only thing that works is the reversing of colours. Period.

Since I work with as many procedural tools as possible so as to avoid the scaling issue, I would love it if anyone found a solution to this problem!

Thanks :)

Thanks, Jeffrey. I'll try to get a screen cap next time it happens. I've not been able to discover a reason for why this bug happens, and has popped up across several different machines randomly over the last couple years (maybe once or twice a year.) None of my coworkers have had the same issue. So strange.

It would be great if we could narrow this down with reproducible steps. I had a QE on the team try to reproduce it yesterday but he wasn't able to make it happen.

If you narrow down consistent steps to make it happen, let us know. If you get stuck in the state, take a screen shot or video so we can examine the layout/state of Photoshop for possible clues. Thanks.

The only way I can "solve" this issue is by not using gradient fills on shape layers while the bug is occurring. Instead, create a solid fill and create a gradient overlay via layer effect.

Hey Chris, as I mentioned in a previous comment, disabling dictation doesn't actually solve the issue. The behavior changes and looks like it's going to work, but one is still unable to make the value entered stick once you click off the shape. Because this bug is so finicky, it's hard to capture on screen.

Again, this sounds similar to the MacOS dictation bugs that can cause a text field value to get cleared or stuck. Disabling the dictation feature in the OS resolves those issues.

This happens to my coworkers and I fairly often.

There's no cause that I can pinpoint — the angle just gets stuck at 0 or 1 and then can't be changed with either the text field OR the draggable circle. You can, however, click the "flip" button and that works fine.

It is often triggered when I have a previously created gradient shape, working a-okay... but then when I click into the gradient settings it jumps to 0 or 1 and can't be changed back.

Then the next day you'll work on the same file and it'll be fine. So strange!

Thank you for the advice, Chris.

Yeah, I've talked to coworkers about it and no one else seems to have ever encountered this. I disabled dictation as you suggested, and strangely enough it made a difference. I can enter a value other than zero now and it will stick, but as soon as I click off of the selected shape (with Path selection tool), the gradient angle reverts back to zero. I can record my screen if you'd like to see in action.

I haven't heard of anyone else with this problem.
But it sounds somewhat like an OS bug in the dictation "feature" that could cause bad value entries into text fields. Turning off the system dictation "feature" solves that problem..
