Photoshop Crashes opening files v25.5

Have had this problem for a while through not just 25.5 but previous versions as well. There seems to be a good few posts of similar nature although perhaps not with the latest release nor with the exact symptoms.

Crash occurs when opening a file pretty much every time - does not appear to be restricted to a particular format. The only solution I have found is to try turning off the GPU which usually solves the issue but obviously makes photoshop so slow as to be useless. I tried turning off the native canvas to see if that made a difference but it just results in photoshop displaying no image at all (blank screen) even though it opens the file and it can be seen in the thumbs for channels/layers pallets.

I've submitted crash reports on this several times in the hopes it may be picked up and fixed in an update but with slim hope.

Latest crash happened when I tried to open a file whilst working on another file (forgetting for a second it is unstable) and it crashed losing me the changes I'd made to the open file.

@Lumigraphics on current Mac OS - all users are considered "Mobile" accounts. Some are also admin but Mobile is standard for a Mac.

AHA! (Maybe) You mentioned that you have your M2 laptop connected to two external monitors...

Try this -

Detach your M2 laptop from the dock/monitors (keep it plugged in/powered up) and try opening a PSD with the GPU active.

Tell IT that it can work, or not. Frame it as a business need. I have an Intel MBP on a Microsoft AD network and do NOT bind to AD. The only real problem I have is that Windows AD machines cannot connect to the Mac's file sharing. Going Mac->PC is fine.

One further thing to mention - it may be unrelated but since messing with pshop prefs etc I now have a new problem which is occurring namely the transform command now no longer shows the controls to manipulate the area to be transformed eg the handles around the selection or the layer to be controlled. This is not a view preference eg turn on the handles under the view menu or turning on the frame edges. It is simply not showing them although if hovering over where they would be the mouse cursor changes to show that it knows there is a handle to be controlled. And clicking/dragging said area does indeed manipulate the selection/area. It's just a pain I cant see the damn things - it's like fiddling around in the dark.

Hi kevin, this is all with a reset photoshop eg prefs refreshed without messing with them.

Battery settings are set to high power but its recieving power from the two studio displays connected to it.

Best practice now is to NOT bind to AD or use a mobile home folder. Use NoMAD and a local home folder. This is almost certainly the problem. Make sure scratch disk is LOCAL only as well.

@vinceb60279068 after the GPU and battery check. Go to Photoshop Help Menu/System Info and copy/paste details in a reply. Post only once as the system takes time to process the large amount of data.

Before you open a PSD and making sure the GPU is active, go to Photoshop Help Menu>CPU Compatibility. Copy and paste the results here.
