Photoshop Save As does not automatically add .psd extension when the filename is replaced

Hi, after a recent Photoshop or macOS update, I noticed a problem with Save As on Mac.

When I open a PSD file and use Save As, the filename field shows the current file name with the .psd extension. If I replace the whole filename with a new name, for example testname, and keep Format: Photoshop selected, Photoshop saves the file without the .psd extension.

So the saved file is:

testname

instead of:

testname.psd

This did not happen before. Since the format is set to Photoshop, I would expect Photoshop to automatically add .psd.

I notice you state your using Photoshop 27.2, is that correct?

If so, please update to 27.7 and see if the issue is still present.

You can update using the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop Application or by going from within Photoshop to Help>Updates.

Yes, i do see this here with Photoshop 2026 (ps ver 27.7) with macOS Tahoe 26.5.1

on a 2019 MacBook Pro Intel processor.

Normally when saving a file, just the filename minus the extension is highlighted, but if for some reason both the file name and extension get highlighted and one enters the file name

no extension is added nor saved when clicking Save.

In the meantime when renaming a file and you notice the file extension is not there you can re-select the format in Format field.
