Bug Report – Adobe Premiere Pro

Subject: Audio waveform display is inconsistent and unreliable depending on timeline zoom level

Issue description

For more than one year, I have been experiencing a recurring issue in Adobe Premiere Pro related to audio waveform visualization in the timeline.

At certain zoom levels (especially when zoomed out), the audio waveform appears partially missing or visually flattened, as if there were no audio data in those sections.
When zooming in, the correct waveform immediately reappears, confirming that the audio was always present and that this is a visual rendering issue, not missing media.

This behavior makes waveform-based editing unreliable and misleading, especially in professional workflows that depend on accurate audio visualization (dialogue editing, music, rhythm-based cuts).

Expected behavior

  • Audio waveforms should accurately represent the audio content at all zoom levels.

  • Zooming in or out should only change detail resolution, not cause waveform sections to disappear or appear silent.

Actual behavior

  • In zoomed-out views, parts of the waveform appear visually empty or overly flattened.

  • In zoomed-in views, the correct waveform is displayed.

  • Audio playback is always correct.

  • The issue occurs in long timelines and can also appear in newly created projects, depending on context.

Troubleshooting already performed

The issue persists after testing all of the following:

  • Full Media Cache cleanup

  • Resetting Premiere Pro preferences

  • Verifying all timeline display options

  • Enabling “Show Audio Waveforms at All Zoom Levels”

  • Disabling narrow audio tracks / compact audio display options

  • Ensuring sequence audio display format is set to Audio Samples

  • Reimporting media

  • Converting audio to WAV / 48 kHz

  • Testing both Stable and Beta versions of Premiere Pro

  • Testing in different projects and sequences

None of these steps resolved the issue.

Impact on professional workflow

This issue:

  • Breaks confidence in waveform-based editing

  • Creates false visual silences, leading to incorrect cuts

  • Forces constant zooming in to verify audio content

  • Makes the waveform unreliable as an editing reference

For professional editors, this results in loss of efficiency, increased cognitive load, and higher risk of editorial mistakes.

Additional notes

This behavior has been reported by users for over a year across multiple Premiere Pro versions, suggesting a structural issue in the waveform rendering engine, especially in long or dense timelines.

Request

I respectfully request that Adobe’s engineering team:

  • Investigate waveform rendering inconsistencies related to timeline zoom

  • Review the audio aggregation logic used in zoomed-out views

  • Provide a fix or an option to force accurate waveform rendering regardless of zoom level

Hi @Natanael_Pfeifer -  Thanks for submitting your bug report. We need a few more details to try to help with the issue.  Can you list your CPU specs and additional information needed  Please see, How to Report a Problem.

Can you try selecting the clip in your sequence, then go to Clip > Generate Audio Waveform from the menu bar?

Can you right click your media clip in the project and select "Media File Properties..." then post a screenshot.
