Continual Crashing of Premiere Pro

Hi Guys

I recently started a new project after return from overseas holidays.  No matter what I do only after creating no more than 60secs of timeline the program continuely crashes giving the error message  'Premiere Pro has encounted an error and must close' I have tried everything

  • Reset preferences
  • Uninstalled PP and installed previous version. have even gone back to try and get 25.4.0 (Build 99) to work.
  • Over the last wo days I have sent countless number of Error Reports,I have documented everything that is happening.
  1. As a final thought I tried to Create a New Project (Using Stand Template Settings)
  2.  A new location to save to on a different internal Hard Drive
  3.  New Folders to bring footage from
  4.  Copied footage into the folder, only three small video clips to try and start.
  5.  After I had done all this opened the New Project and created a new bin for the footage and imported , then crash.
  6. Sent report and tried again and discovered that the New Project hadn't saved.
  7.  Opened New Projected created one bin imported three small bits of footage and hit 'Save' which 'hung' then crashed so have no idea where to go next.

I just read some post from back 2024 where a user sems to have been experiencing the very same issues ,with a solution suggestion install version 24.0.0 ???

You're welcome @JP2512! Transcoding a file shouldn't affect it as long as there is access to that file and it's linked in the project, and it's good to have updated versions when possible. Though interesting, it sounds like it was only happening with a specific clip? Glad it ended up working.

Hi

Thanks for the response. No as you said, what I was trying to do was edit a single clip (Audio) from PP to Audition and that option in the drop down menu was greyed out. From what you said you seemed to think that there was a nested or other make up to the sequence. To the best of my knowledge there wasn't. Funny thing I am in the process of doing final voice overs and sound tweeks and I couldn't find that issue again. Two things I thought,  would the clip being transcoded first before importing to edit be a cause, and the other thing was I downloaded the latest version of Audition and was wondering if that fixed it???

Anyway thanks again for your input .

Hi @JP2512, good to hear the other issue was fixed. The options available to 'Edit in Audition' depend on the kind of asset you are trying to edit, which you can tell apart by the little icons they have in the Project panel (I added a screenshot  with a sample of some of these different icons in List View).

If I'm understanding correctly, you are only seeing the option to 'Edit Sequence' available? Might you be trying to edit a sequence (which usually contains multiple clips), a sub-sequence, or a nest, instead of an individual clip? In this case, 'Edit Sequence' will be the only available option since it isn't the singular clips, if that makes sense. A screenshot or screenrecording showing what you are trying to edit could also help understand better if this isn't the case.

Here is an article with more info: Editing audio in Adobe Audition

Hi

Yes that fixed that issue. Maybe you could help with another issue I have noticed, which seems to appeared . When trying to edit an Audio Clip linked to media in the timeline you were able to click on the clip and you would get the drop down menu with an option 'Edit Audio in Adobe Audition' now that option is greyed out. I did read where if you go to 'Edit' 'Edit in Adobe Audition' but that has 'Clip' greyed out and only 'Sequence ' available . Is that the normal  now or is it possible to enable the 'Edit in Adobe Audition' in the drop down menu which as before would enable you to edit the clip audio in Audition?

Hi @JP2512, it sounds like you are working between track keyframes (for the entire audio track, in which case the keyframe line does extend beyond the audio clips in the timeline) and clip keyframes (keyframe line specific to audio clip only)? In that case, then current behavior won't let you select and move the audio clips until you disable the audio track keyframes and enable the clip keyframes instead.

Regarding playback continuing past the end of media, is it possible there is a 'hidden' clip or leftover piece of media in your timeline beyond that point? Playback will continue if there is more media farther down the timeline, and sometimes very short sections of media or even captions are moved around while editing and not immediately visible, especially in longer or complex sequences.

Hi Dani

Just a couple of questions in regards to the Audio Tracks. Is it normal if you select 'Show Keyframes / Volume' in a lower audio track you then can't select it withou first de-selecting 'show keyframes / volume' ?

Secondly recently I have noticed on some occasions the 'volume level line' in the same track extends beyond the end of the media therefore causing the playing head to continue well past the end of the media, as if looking for an end?

Hi Dani-V

Well just wanted to update on our progress at this time.  We have been successful in editing without PP crashing since those suggested setting changes. The transcoding before editing seems to have been the main factor in preventing PP from crashing. We have had the odd crash with ME but it hasn't caused PP to crash and we have been able to work without issues

Thanks😊

Hi

Appreciate the timely feedback, all good . So previouly when I had ingest checked ME would show in the screen and do the transcoding Since then  I have tried a couple of ways without ingest checked, firstly just using ME by dropping files straight into the ME and using either ProRes and H264 formats. When it transcodes each file is duplicated it into a MOV file which as you said is more editing friendly. Once done I have then just Imported the MOV files into PP for editing. Seems a bit longer but at least no crashes at this stage.

Hi @JP2512, ah so with Ingest enabled, the transcodes are being created in the background through Media Encoder so you can keep editing in Premiere Pro. The apps are linked, so you can see the progress of it in Premiere Pro but the actual transcoding is happening in Media Encoder. Part of this automation is that once they are finished transcoding, Premiere Pro will start referencing the new transcodes—in this case you are are making ProRes files so Premiere Pro will reference the more editing friendly .movs instead of the .mpegs, and you will be editing with the .movs moving forward.
