Every time I try to open a project with a version of Premiere newer than 25.5, it crashes immediately upon loading. It doesn’t matter if it’s v26 or 25.6.x. I’ve tried restarting the computer, resetting the preferences and clearing the cache, restarting again, none of it worked.

However, it does appear I can open a new project in v26 without it crashing, and I can open a v26 project that a co-worker creeated and I took over (they were able to successfully update a while back and are not getting my errors).

I’m on an Apple M3 Max chip, macOS 26.2, 96 GB RAM.

Please help.

    Hi @GrumpyCustomer

I’m sorry this problem is making you grumpy. I totally understand.  How are you opening the projects - what method?  Is it every project created earlier than 25.5?  What version were the original project files from?  Are you able to provide a 25.x project file that won’t open so that we can take a look?  We don’t need the media, just the project file to start.  What version of 26 are you currently using?

If you have time, please share a few more details with the team. See: How do I Report A Problem?  Because the more ingo the better.  I hope we can help you soon.

I’m using v26.0 Build 72. I open the projects by double-clicking the existing project in Finder. And as mentioned, I tried importing a v25.5 project file (that was working in 25.5) into v26.0 via the media browser, but that also crashed it immediately. My 25.5 projects will also crash in 25.6.x versions.

I just tested opening a project from 2024 (I don’t know the version it was saved in) in v26.0 and it was successful. However, none of my recent projects, which are all v25.5, will open without crashing. I’ll share a project file. Here are more details:

    • Issue – Premiere v26.0 crashes whenever opening a v25.5 project file. v25.6.x will also crash if attempting to open a v25.5 project file.
    • Steps to reproduce – 1. Open project by double-clicking. 2. Accept that it needs to be converted. 3. Premiere loads. 4. Premiere immediately crashes after media links.
    • Expected result – Premiere should not crash.
    • Actual result – Premiere crashes.
    • Screen recording – Not necessary.
    • Adobe Premiere Pro version – 26.0 Build 72 and 25.5.0 Build 13
    • Operating system – macOS 26.2, Apple M3 Max chip
    • Video format – If your issue is related to video playback or export, please let us know what format the video is in. Ideally, share with us a sample video.
    • Comparative information helps us understand more about when the issue occurs:
      • Projects made in v26.0 are fine, and apparently much older projects as I tested opening one from 2024 and it converted successfully without crashing.
      • Cannot import a v25.5 project into v26.0 either. It crashes.
      • v25.5.x is also unable to open 25.5.0 projects for me.

    Hi @GrumpyCustomer

I was able to open the project file in 26.0.0 (build 72) without issue.  I saved out a copy and attached it below.  Let me know if that works for you.  Obviously, I didn’t have the media to create and an additional layer of factors, but hopefully this helps.
