The outline of the mask not showing at all when creating a mask in any situation in premiere 2026

When I try to use object masking, it doesn’t work. The lasso doesn’t work, and neither does the rectangle. Every other mask works, but I need the tracker because what I’m trying to mask is always moving. It was working fine last night, but now it’s like Premiere doesn’t even realize I’m using the tool at all. Everything is up to date

Same issue. Everything worked on the last video. Now it doesn’t. I’ve toggled guides/rulers/etc. I confirmed that the mask still works by dragging it to the Opacity Effect. But I have to guess what is being masked. SUPER FRUSTRATING 😢

Same thing happening here. Tried many of the solutions below.

    Windows 10

    CPU Ryzen 5900x

Same issue here, no visible mask outlines. No rulers or guides active, changing to opacity mask didn’t change anything. The new mask feature worked for me before, I know how to use it. Though it was much more hardware demanding than the old one. Its seriously a joke that I can’t access basic and often used features, the new mask should have stayed in the beta until Adobe figured out all the bugs. Its horrible to have this in a release version, can’t believe I pay money for this. And another reason to switch to DaVinci.

Updating my graphics card driver solved this issue for me (Windows 10, NVIDIA GPU)

Unfortunately, it seems to have only been a temporary fix or a coincidence, because  the problem has returned.

I think I found a solution, or at least it worked for me:

    • In the object mask dropdown menu, select “Pen Mask Tool”
    • Create the mask you need
    • The mask will appear under “Unassigned Masks” in “Effect Controls”. Right-click the mask and select “Convert to Opacity Mask”, and that’s it.

Same issue, all masking indicators are invisible.

EDIT: A Premiere Pro restart fixed it but still shouldn’t be happening

First, I don’t know if you’ve read all the documentation on the very, very different masking process in Pr 26.x. If you haven’t, go to their online help and read up ... many of the folks having this simply didn’t understand how different this is ... you can’t work like before.

Second, there have been issues for some users if the guides and rulers are turned on in the Program monitor. If your guides/rulers are active, turn them off and see if the mask comes visible.

Supposedly a fix is coming to the public beta (might be out, I don’t  know) and to the ‘shipping’ version in the next patch update. But they never give timing on that.

Adobe why the hell are we completely bricking a simple workflow that has been in place for…. decades?

    TEST IN PROJECTS

In the video linked I try to show when this bug happens and when not it seems to me that is something to do with the masks folders there created or with the new rotoscopie system. I’ve tested previously the ruler and box out preview but it dind’t solve either. Premiere is updated 26.0.1.

This most likely isn’t a permanent solution, as I had working/editable layer masks when I first opened and made a mask.  But during my editing session, this problem arose where the box/anchor points went invisible, and toggling different tools/related settings did nothing until I randomly turned off my ruler and guides and suddenly the frame came back.  So maybe that might help for those troubleshooting a quick fix while a patch or something is found to address it permanently, because it’s beyond frustrating to try and work with an invisible effect

There is an acknowledged issue of things going buggy with rulers & guides turned on … so yea, that needs fixing.

    Same issue here.

    My Specs:
    OS: Windows 11 Pro 25H2
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor, 3.8 GHz
    RAM: 32 GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB (Driver updated: 30.12.2025, Version 32.0.15.9174)

No matter what kind of masking-tool I use, it shows no colored selection, no points, no paths. Watched tutorials on YT, nothing helped: no rulers off-showing, no scaling of my window, no other tools. Pretty annoying. This is like a blindflight.

I just want to have a fix mask, where beneath a text flies in. No chance to pin the mask on a point. That was so easy, the versions before. So… WHY????

I understand that it’ll help for tracking and masking, but not for my case. PLS HELP!!!

They changed the entire behavior and the VAST majority of YouTube videos are simply irrelevant!

Hove over the Object Mask Tool as shown in MattVant’s post ... but by hovering, a dialog pops up with the link to the information on how to use the new masking setup. Which is very different and far more powerful than the old.

First of all thanks for your fast reply, even if it’s not a solution for my problem. Well, as I reopened Premiere, it worked and I now can see the maskframe with points etc. BUT: Now my question is why is the complete maskframe not colored? Again: I want “Bonerath” to appear from left to right after the pin. Therefor I have to mask the layer as rectangle leftside from the pin (rest with keyframes). But it wouldn’t mark it… know, what I mean (see picture). This is a bug and I am quite sure, it’s not because of better development 😁
