P: Constant freezing making editing next to impossible

  • April 19, 2026

Approximately every other edit, the application becomes unresponsive for 30 seconds to a minute. During this time:

  • The UI freezes completely
  • Playback may continue, but I cannot stop or interact with it
  • Menu interactions are extremely delayed or unresponsive
  • The system becomes partially unresponsive (e.g., Alt+Tab does not work until Premiere responds again)

This issue also occurs when pressing play, and when opening menus.

The problem began suddenly without any known changes to my workflow or system configuration. It occurs across all projects.

Troubleshooting attempts:

  • Updated GPU drivers
  • Cleared media cache multiple times (both “clear unused” and “clear all”)
  • Tested editing from different drives (including internal and external storage)

None of these steps resolved the issue.

This behavior is severely impacting usability and makes editing extremely frustrating.

I split everyone here off onto a new post based on the main issue happening. We are still investigating the cause that is NOT related to Accessibility features, which is currently being worked on.

Please if you experience a freeze or hang in 26.5 with Accessibility features disabled, we could use Dump files from your system to help us ID the issue that is not related to accessibility features, which we are currently working on fixing on this separate post:

    WINDOWS dump file:

    1. Open Task Manager go to the Processes tab, and identify the Premiere process (you can use search to filter for only Premiere)
    2. In Premiere, get it into the hanging/unresponsive state
    3. Switch back to Task Manager and right click on Premiere then choose > Create dump file
    4. When it's finished, it tells you where it saves the .DMP file.
    5. It'll be large, but it ZIPs down smaller. So right click on the file and choose Compress to..ZIP file.
    6. Then, you can DM me and either provide us the link/access to this file or I can send you a link to upload that file, whatever's easiest.

Other freezing / Hang related issues we have branched off and ID’d specific potential triggers are below:

We believe this is specific to the Panel interactions:

We believe this is specific to File Explorer:

    Hoping to help,

    Amy

I’m running PP 26.3 and I have this problem.  I can edit find, import files, create proxies, work with a sequence, but as soon as I touch a Top Menu, the app freezes for 2 minutes.

In my case Windows Magnifier has never been enabled or active.

Hi @MarvinHeston we are trying to organize these posts in a way that can help us pinpoint the source of the problems. I’ve moved you to this post we are trying to use to track a freezing / hang issues. I’m wondering if you would be willing to provide us with a DUMP file during this freeze / hang so we get a better idea of what could be causing this.

I see unresponsiveness every time Premiere auto saves in the background.

As soon as auto save is done I can edit again.

Same problem, been a problem for a few weeks. If I alt tab for anything and then go back to premiere I have to wait 30-60 seconds for it to become responsive again. Its been totally distroying my editing time.
    Whats the fix????

If you’re on Windows, this makes sense. The ALT key is the shortcut on Windows for Menu Acceleration (to put focus on the Menu bar, and make Key tips available). So hitting the ALT key is in practice the same as opening av menu.

To add further. It doesn’t just happen from Alt-tabbing. If i click into another program and then attempt to return to premiere, it freezes.

    Hi @Paganwolf13

Thanks for stopping by the Premiere forums! Sorry to hear you’ve having issues, and I wanted to let you know this is part of an on-going investigation our team is working on. I’ve added your post to that bug report and appreciate your details.

Wanted to confirm you have the latest Studio driver and which version/build of Premiere v26.X?  You can find that by launching Premiere and going to the top menu Help > About Premiere.

It sounds like a workaround that’s doing well for you is going back into v25.X, can you let us know which specific v25 version/build was it last working in?

In some cases, they have additionally identified that having Windows Accessibility on such as ‘Magnifier’ could create issues. See this post:

Even if you did not actively turn Magnifier on, sometimes it can be toggled on from launching certain Steam games, etc. I would check on that, as well.

I’ll provide an update once I receive further information. Thank you again for taking the time to report about this bug, it’s a huge help.

    Appreciate it,
    Katie

Premiere Pro 2026 is unusable on my system despite Premiere Pro 2025 running flawlessly.

    My hardware:

    • RTX 2080 Ti (Studio Driver)
    • Windows 11

    My workload is extremely lightweight:

    • One static image
    • One audio track
    • Approximately 46 minutes long
    • No effects, no multicam, no color grading, no 4K/8K footage

Premiere Pro 2025 edits much larger projects without issue, including timelines with dozens of layers and large exports.

In Premiere Pro 2026, basic UI actions consistently caused severe freezes:

    • Enabling/disabling Snap
    • Zooming the timeline
    • General timeline interaction

During these freezes, Premiere's memory usage increased dramatically (roughly from 800 MB to around 5 GB), Windows reported the application as "Not Responding," and in one instance the entire system became so unresponsive that I couldn't even open Task Manager for several minutes.

Reverting to Premiere Pro 2025 immediately resolved the issue.

I’m having the same issue. I’m trying to solve in every way possible the past 2 days.

We have an update while we continue investigating this issue. Do any of you happen to have Magnifier or Post Automate or any kind of Accessibility enabled? One user reported as an update that they found Magnifier to be the cause and disabling that helped. To note, any type of Accessibility seems to create this issue.

    Appreciate your patience,
    Katie

    Hello @wesley_0295 , @thebirdmann , @valeriiege , @DarthJarJar and @0xxl3

We have been tracking this issue and are still trying to narrow it down. I am sorry for the inconvenience.

So far we have noticed it primarily on Windows PCs that have the Magnifier active. We are wondering if the issues you are facing fall into this same category as the issue linked below, but would love if you would confirm, otherwise the search continues.

Thank you for your help and apologies for the ongoing frustration.

It is extremely similar, however I never have the magnifier enabled so that cannot be my problem. But accessing top level menus will lock up the software for an absurd amount of time as well as some panels.

New version freezes less, that I can say, but it still, as Wesley says, locks up the software for an absurd amount of time. I have not upgraded my Premiere because everything after 26.0 has the same problem. Whatever has changed between 26.0 and 26.0.1 is causing the problem.

HI, I tried this and it helped with the others versions - I will try in the latest during thr weekend

pdate or Switch Your Graphics Driver

An outdated or corrupt graphics driver is the number one reason CUDA or OpenCL fails to render the video image while audio plays perfectly.

    • For NVIDIA Users: Open the NVIDIA GeForce Experience app. Go to the Drivers tab, click the three dots next to the update button, and switch from the Game Ready Driver to the Studio Driver. Studio Drivers are specifically optimized for stability in Adobe software.
    • For AMD Users: Go to the AMD website and download the latest Adrenalin Edition WHQL driver for your specific graphics card.

    Bonjour,

    Configuration :

    • Windows 11
    • HP Omen 16-wd0045nf
    • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU
    • Pilote NVIDIA 592.27
    • Intel UHD Graphics
    • 16 Go RAM
