P: Unable to freely move clips and audio around on my timeline. Glitch, bug or setting?

If anyone is able to wave a magic wand and help me fix this issue then I would be so very grateful!

I am using Premier pro 25.1 on a windows PC, I opened up my project the other day to start work and I was unable to freely click on a clip and drag the clip about on the timeline with the same thing happening with audio. When I do click on a clip to move or drag it I am presented with the picture I have attached, in my program window.

I have tried everything on nearly every forum page I can find, reset all settings from splash, cleared cache, uninstalled and reinstalled softwear, new project, everything I can think of but I can't find anything anyway with someone with this same fault.

Thank you if anyone can save me!

And you control that thru Creative Desktop preferences:

I just got done filming, sat down to edit and premier did an update. It happens from time to time, that's fine. When the update was done and I opened premier, every track was locked in place and couldn't be moved. I did some research and found that there is a bug when you set you scale your display with more than one monitor. Why would this not be a proiority to fix? So I turned the sale on all my monitors to 100%. Now the font is completely unreadable.

I am sitting here totally screwed at this point. The only option I have now is to completely redo the hardware on my computer or do the project in Davinci Resolve. The project is now due in 20 hours and I've been completely screwed over by adobe.

With all due respect you do not update the software when on a deadline.

Just roll back a version to finish the project.

I had a similar issue, this worked for me, go to Window > Workspace > Reset to Saved Layout

I've found in Premiere Pro 2025 that whether I can drag the effect onto the timeline depends on which monitor Premiere is displaying on. If it is on my laptop monitor (which is GPU accellerated) it will work, but if through an HDMI cable through the integrated graphics card I only get the crossed out hand icon as described below.

Hi Zachary,

I think you might be experiencing a bug, so I merged your post with the bug report. I hope that's OK. There are some workarounds here. I appreciate your comments. They are helpful and I have sent them over to the team. I think you may have uncovered a way to help reproduce the error. Great! The team is still working on the issue. Sorry about that!

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi everyone, I need help! After Adobe Premiere crashed, I'm no longer able to add any clips to my timeline. There's no error message, just the cursor turning into a "no entry" sign (circle with a line through it). I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling Premiere, restarting my PC, and clearing the media cache, but nothing worked.

Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated—it's really urgent!

Thanks!

If this does not solve your issue:

Make new project and import old one.

Trash preferences and media cache.

Hello Rach, thank you for your attention to this problem.

My setup is:

  • Dell XPS 15 laptop with 3456x2160 native resolution display, set to 250% scale (any smaller and the text is unreadable)
  • Office montiors: two identical Dell 27" monitors, DisplayPort connection for one, HDMI for the other. Both are 1440p resolution. The third monitor is an HP, 20", 1080p display, connected via HDMI. All are connected to the laptop via a Dell Thunderbolt 4 dock. Each has its scaling set to 100%.
  • Home monitors: two identical LG 27" displays, both 1080p, both at 100% scaling, both connected via HDMI. Third monitor is an Acer 27" display, 1080p, connected via DisplayPort. Again, all are connected through a Dell Thunderbolt 4 dock.
  • I am working from home today, so I can only show you those settings via screen grab:

Hi Rachel,

Please see attached video.

Hope it helps.
The monitor I'm using is a TCL TV with a HDMI connection to the laptop.

Hello Everyone,
We are actively looking into this and could use even more information.  Can you please tell us:
The brand of monitor.

The connection type (HDMI/ Displayport/etc)
Could you provide a screengrab of your display settings?
Bonus points if you can provide a recording of both monitors at the same time to show what's happening.
Thank you so much for your contributions and patience.
