Premiere Pro crashes every time I export

Premiere pro (latest version, fully updated and with no plugins) keeps crashing every time I try to export, in every format except Apple ProRes.

I have a fully updated Macbook Pro from 2019 (CPU 2,4 GHz Intel Core i9 8 core, GPU Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB, OS Sequoia 15.3.2) and never had issues until two days ago, when I edited a recording of a Zoom call (a .mov file) and tried to export it in H.264.

The only thing I did different from usual was to edit the file audio with Enhance Speech.

Since then, every time I try to export in a format different from Apple ProRes, the app crashes.

Even past projects that I exported perfectly the day before this.

Can someone please help me fix this? I've tried everything (cleaning cache, reinstalling, trying different CBR, even trying with older versions of the app) and nothing works.

Hello Laura,

I have exactly the same problem. By chance, I found out that the export works perfectly if I use a different user account on my Macbook Pro. Maybe that will also help you as a temporary solution.

Hi Laura219029740xgc,

We're sorry to hear about this. Could you please share a screenshot of the Media Preferences window in Premiere Pro (Premiere Pro > Settings > Media)?

Thanks,

Sumeet

Every single project I tried exporting crashes. New ones and past ones, even those that are just one minute long and have no effects or edits on it.

For example: If I import a 15 seconds clip (.mov file downloaded from Shutterstock, 25fps, 1920x1080, 8,1MB, Codec H.264) and make a timeline with only that clip on it, it crashes when I try to export it in H.264, no export settings changed. Today I tested even more formats when exporting (default settings, timeline with only that clip):

Apple Pro Res MXF OP1a - no crash

H.264 - always crashes

H.264 Blu-ray - no crash

HEVC (H.265) - always crashes

MPEG 2 - no crash

Quicktime - always crashes

I've resorted to exporting in another format and then converting to mp4, but it's not ideal. Let me know if you have any advice. I had never had this issue before working on that Zoom recording (a 6 minute .mov file, Codec MPEG-4 AAC, H.264) and editing with Enhance Speech. It's almost like it broke something in the app itself, because now it's a general problem with every single project.

Hi @Laura219029740xgc,

Thanks for submitting your bug report.  Scott's suggestion will work in helping narrow down the problem area, but it can take a bit of time.  Can you give more details about your clip and export settings?  We need a few more details to try to help with the issue. Please see: How do I write a bug report?  Sorry for the frustration, and thanks for reaching out.

One way to identify crashing outputs and renders is to use the 'half timeline' method. Duplicate your timeline twice. Delete the first half in one, last half in the other. Then try the same operation in each of those halves. If one half outputs and the other crashes, take the one that crashes and half it again. Continue that process until you narrow down the issue, which can help you identify a corrupted clip or some specific problem that may be causing the issue. It's not always the answer, but you'll be surprised how often you can identify a problem that way.

Yes, it's the first thing I tried, and then I tried again after reinstalling the app.

Have you tried turning off Hardware encoding in the Video tab of the export settings?
