ProRes color/contrast differences - 422, 422HQ, 4444 XQ

Adobe Premiere 2026.2.2 (Build 3). I have been roundtripping (export > reimport) .mov ProRes exports from my timeline and noticed a contrast/gamma shift on my ProRes exports. Image is noticeably darker.

Seems to only be affecting exports from .R3D source material.

This is new and should NOT be happening.

Funny thing is...this change only seems to occurs in 422 HQ, 4444, and 4444 XQ - not in 422.

- Color Management is off.
- Same exporting from Premiere or Media Encoder.

I’m pretty sure this has to do with exporting R3D footage to ProRes.

Dynamic-linked clips to AE and exported. It does NOT have this problem.

Ladies and Gentlemen - we have a Premiere Bug.

    Thank you for posting this. It just saved a major release music video from having to upload an MP4 instead of a high quality ProRes. I wonder how long this has been an issue cause i remember it happening in the past at some point as well. Thank you for the solution!!!!

    ​@;Dooley Can we get some more details about what happened with your music video, what version Premiere, etc? We have not recreated this issue and would like to help.

    • Premiere Version: Find the exact version/build of Premiere you’re current using.
    • Operating System: Specify Windows or macOS, along with the version.
    • Mac Chip (Mac Only): Please let us know what M-series chip you have. If Intel please include GPU.
    • GPU and Driver (Windows only): Please let us know your video card and driver version. We recommend updating to the most recent version; for NVIDIA users, we strongly recommend the Studio version of the driver.
    • Media Files: video, images, etc. and what types (can check under Media Properties)
    • Media Storage: Are your Scratch Disks set to your Documents folder or the same as project, and is this the same as the Media drive?

    Also, if you could please let us know the following, this is also help to know:

    • Does it affect all projects or only some? What about new, empty projects?
    • Do you recall which Premiere this was last working in, and what might have changed? Any plugins, update to computer, etc.
    • When did the problem first begin?

    Macbook Pro M1

    OS: Tahoe 26.5.1

    Premiere Pro 26.3.2 (build 2)

    Footage: Redraw R3D 

    Red Source Color Settings: 

         Color Version: Version 2

         Color Space: DRAGONcolor2

         Gamma Curve: REDgamma4

    It also may be relevant that this is a mixed timeline with many different camera footage and resolutions.
     

    I do not often use the old Red Epic camera footage so couldn’t tell you when it last worked. I remember having a similar issue in the past, but it would have been a number of years ago.

    I attempted to export this in several versions of ProRes with different settings but the issue persisted where the Red footage would be significantly darker. Once I followed the suggestion here to turn off Lumetri color management it exported as expected. It really saved me as we were already behind schedule. 
     

    last time we used Red cameras I think I also had issues but never figured it out so accepted the darker footage and adjusted the color correction to compensate. That one was shot entirely on Red so was easy to just up the exposure across the board. This one was much more complicated so it would have been impossible to correct in time. I really  great full I found this workaround.

    While we are trying to resolve this, keep an eye out tomorrow for a big release ;D If you are into heavier music you will not be disappointed!

      Welcome to the Premiere Pro forums! We are glad to see you here. Thanks for providing which version of Premiere you’re having issues in with the R3d to ProRes exports, both directly from Premiere, and the same with Media Encoder. If you could include screenshots or a sample clip, that’d be appreciated. We did need a few more details to try to help with the issue. Please see, How do I write a bug report?

      I did also see your comment mentioning that disabling Color Management in Sequence Settings helped solve the issue. So if you disable that, everything appears as expected?

      Disabling Color Management IN SEQUENCE did prevent this issue, but this shouldn’t be happening and is a big offshoot and unnecessary step.
