Relinking media takes a long time over NAS

Premiere Pro takes a very long time to relink all medias when opening a project over a NAS.  It's in background but you can't really work on the project when medias are pending.  On smaller projects it's managable, but on feature lenght documentaries, it can take from 30 minutes to an hour to be ready.

The NAS is a QNAP TS-h1886XU, all the network is on 10gb, the NAS is connected to it's switch over a 20gb fiber link.  I'm working on a Mac Studio M2 Max.  I did a LAN test and I reach 5gbits in reading so it's fast.  The network dosen't seems to be the problem.

I also tried to copy all the project on a good old 4TB Hd, which is WAY slower than the network, and the project open fine.

I really seems that something in premiere is not working correctly when the files are over a network volume.  Is there something I can do on my side to speed up things?

By the way the volume is mounted on the mac via SMB.

Thanks for your help!

Hi, I'm running into the same problem. I have roughly 5To of footage on a network and it takes between 40 min and 1 hour to relink all elements. So frustrating to waste this amount of time. I tried to downgrade my project to a 2023 version but it does not seem to work for no reason. Please Adobe, provide us with a reliable solution.

Also seeing this. And oddly dyamic link detects the change to the linked AE project, but doesn't reload it at all without reopening Premiere. This seems to be introduced in the latest build.

While I can blame some of the tardiness on my NAS, it is still very odd that I can open an After Effects projects with hundreds of files and everything snaps right open - yet Premiere takes so long. If the files' paths have not changed and no relinking is required, what exactly is Premiere doing? Why is it doing anything?

It reminds me of sending files to AME to create proxies. If you select a bunch of files, Premiere slllllowwlllyyy sends them over one at a time to AME. What exactly takes so long? It's just a list of files combined with a general instruction to apply the same preset. It feels like the code is insisting to do one file at a time when sending over a list all in one would be so much more efficient. If I grab a bunch of files in the finder and drag and drop them into AME then - ZIP! - they get added right away.

I think Premiere is relinking the files because some code in there has to verify the location of EACH and EVERY file, one at a time. But they should just be linked. I would love to challenge the programmers to make it much faster to relink and remove any roadblocks. Perhaps go the route of Avid Media composer and drop small database files in the media folders so Premiere has a quick reference of what's there. Or maybe at least have an option to not relink and instead have Premiere assume the media is there and if we play a timeline and something is missing, then we can "refresh" the media.

My two cents.

Couldnt agree more. Genuinley no other program has this! Resolve basically is imediate. Other adobe programs - immediate. They have done something weird with the new releases. Wish they would fix some of the things that have been awful for years as well as this instead of auto colour and auto everything that we all turn off because its useless. We are now having to let projects sit overnight to 'Re Link' and generate audio waveforms if they are opened on new machines.

Has anyone heard of any kind of improvement or resolution to this important issue?

Yes. It is not 100% better, but it is nothing like the headache of the 2024 version.

Did upgrading to 2025 help your issues out? Or do you still rum 2024?

I have same problem when working remote. Using PC and version 24.6.1 . The extreamly slow process to relink before able to start work in the projekt appears when I work remotely over VPN-Connection.

If the media files is located on server and not locally. It works fast from same server when in offic and VPN not need to be used. It has not been that problem before. Has come recently.

I luckily still had it installed on my system. I have been using that version with all new projects that have come in and it works like a charm again.

I cant seem to find V23.0 anywhere.

I have been back and forth with QNAP customer service for a while now and they cant seem to find what the problem is.  They even tried to recreate my work flow and still very little improvement.   They suggest turning of cache acceleration but that didnt seem to do very much.

Does going back all the way to V23 really work?  if so I think that is probably the best route.

It just took me over an hour to reconnect to a project that is connected to 12tb of footage via 10gbe connection using a mac studio that is more than powerful to handle the work.

it be great to find some resolution to this.

The only way I have overcome this issue was to knock myself back to V23.0.  Now it works like a charm again.
