timer interpolation - Optical flow not rendering properly

As some may have experienced frames where camera flashes occurs may become glitchy whily using “Optical Flow” as time interpolation setting, I know this is a known issue and that using a different TI setting will solve it, the thing is I recently updated to V 26.5.2 (build 5) and ever since I’m no longer able to view those glitchy frames during playback but until the sequence is rendering, so it’s giving the impression that all flashes are not causing glitchy frames (and actually you can’t tell the optical flow is active during playback in the program monitor) never experienced this in previous versions, and it seems and actual issue not being able to detect those glitchy frames in the program monitor but until the files has been rendered.

    Hi @fernando_5739

Thanks for stopping by the Premiere forums and giving us some details about your Optical Flow issue in v26.5.2(build 5). It sounds like you were prior able to see when there might be any glitches due to using Optical Flow TI during playback in Program Monitor, correct? Was that v26.5 or what was the last version of Premiere you recall where it did display this as expected?

    1. When you say it appears after the sequence is rendered, do you mean using Render In to Out or from exporting?
    2. If the flash artifact is indeed showing in the exported file, is it at the same frame/timecode as the rendered timeline?
    3. Can you confirm if that glitch behavior changes when the same clip uses say Frame Blend/Sampling instead of Optical Flow?

In order to better troubleshoot, can we also ask for more information about your setup from bug report details. see below -

    • Operating System: Specify Windows or macOS, along with the version.
    • Mac Chip (Mac Only): Please let us know what M-series chip you have. If Intel please include GPU.
    • GPU and Driver (Windows only): Please let us know your video card and driver version. We recommend updating to the most recent version; for NVIDIA users, we strongly recommend the Studio version of the driver.
    • Media Files: video, images, etc. and what types (can check under Media Properties)
    • Media Storage: Are your Scratch Disks set to your Documents folder or the same as project, and is this the same as the Media drive?

    This is helpful for context:

    • Does it affect all projects or only some? What about new, empty projects?
    • Do you recall which Premiere this was last working in, and what might have changed? Any plugins, update to computer, etc.

Finally, may be really helpful if you can include a short screen recording showing us exactly what is happening with this issue on your end.

Sorry for any frustration with this, and we do hope to help!

    1. When you say it appears after the sequence is rendered, No, I mean exporting the sequence, I don’t tend to use render in to out, but in the meantime it seems I will have to because otherwise I won’t be able to see glitching frames?
    2. the original flash comes from a strobe light, seeing that flash won’t be an issue, however changing to optical flow causes intensive distortion in the frames where the camera flash occurs, that’s been the “normal” behaviour as far as I can remember while using Optical Flow, however in past versions the timeline would be able to reproduce those glitchy frames in the program monitor, meaning I would be able to tell if “optical flow” will affect severely my final render.
    3. the glitchy distortion only affects the clip when optical flow is activated, and just to make it clear using “optical flow” won’t affect ALL OF MY clips, the glitchy distortion only happens when camera flash/strobe light occurs. I’m fine with that and always have been and expected outcome while working with footage that includes camera flashes/strobes lights, I just want to be able too see those glitchy frames in my program monitor with, also I would said the whole optical flow is broken and not playing properly in program monitor, I noted that the smoothness was not the same as in previous version, I thought it was just an impression until I found out about the glitchy frames showing up in the final rendered files, meaning the smoothness in the final render is working as usual, but won’t work in normal program monitor playback.

I don’t recall which was the last version I upgraded from, I just can say it was already Pr 26.

mac os, golden gate, m2 mac studio, scratch disk is the same. I’m sorry I don’t have better samples for now and due to privacy policy I can’t show much, you can see the distortion in the second image, the distortion itself is not the problem but the fact that I’m not able to see it during program monitor playback (oddly I was able to tell the glitchy frames during playback while I tried to capture some sample screenshots for you, so I guess I would keep and eye if these happen again in new projects

@fernando_5739 Thanks for the additional information and screenshot. I understand the issue more clearly now. The flash related distortion itself is expected with Optical Flow, but you’re concerned that it isn’t consistently visible in the Program Monitor during playback, even though it appears in the export.

If it happens again, could you note what you were doing when the distortion became visible while capturing the screenshot? Was Premiere playing, paused, or had you rendered that section?

If convenient, does using Render In to Out affect whether you can see the distortion in the Program Monitor? It would also help to know whether you can reproduce this in a new project with the same clip, or with another clip containing a flash. If so, please include the source and sequence frame rates, retiming speed, and how Optical Flow is applied.

We completely understand your privacy concerns. If the issue occurs again and you’re comfortable sharing a short, trimmed sample that reproduces it, I can provide a private upload link so we can investigate further. No need to share anything sensitive.

Thanks again for your time and the extra details!
    Katie
