Track Matte Key not working with keyframes in PP 2026.0.1

The Track Mate Key plugin uses the alpha or luminance information of one clip to key or matte another clip in the same position in the timeline.

In previous versions of PP the key clip’s position, size or rotation etc could be animated, and this would flow through to affect the matte for the other clip. The key clip could be trimmed and this had no bearing on the keyframes.

Now in 2026.0.1 the Track Matte key plug-in does not recognise that the source clip has been trimmed and offsets the keys as if the clip is untrimmed. This shifts the values of the keyframes out of sync with the timeline, making keyframing the matte clip with Track Matte Key unusable.

Please can this be fixed for the next PP update.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi @LastArkTom -   Thanks for submitting your bug report. We need a few more details to try to help with the issue.
Please see, How do I write a bug report?

If you are using masks in Premiere version 26.0.1 has changed the way they work.  Please see this article on how masks work now: New Masking Tools FAQs & Links

    Sorry for the frustration.

    Hi Jamie,

    Thanks for the reply.

So this issue has nothing to do with masks or the masks update. I’ll give more detail.

    PC - Windows 11 Pro

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti - latest game ready driver.

    Sequence settings 4096x1745 (2.35 1 aspect ratio) 25fps.

    The steps to reproduce are.

    Three tracks.

V1 is the footage (that is affected by the above adjustment layer). Let’s imagine it’s a landscape.

V2 is an adjustment layer (with whatever effect you want but let’s say a blur) that also contains the Track Matte Key effect.

V3 is the alpha source footage that the Track Matte Key references. Let’s just imagine it’s a white star image on black background QT file 32bit with embedded alpha.

The star in V3 is keyframed animating across the screen.

The adjustment layer in V2 applies the blur to the V1 landscape footage, matted by the Track Matte Key plug-in, referencing the image of the star (could be alpha or luminance. Either result would be the same).

The end result should be a star shape blur moving across the landscape.

In 2026.0.1 this works only if the entire star clip is used. If the star clip is trimmed (lets say by one second) , then the Track Matte Key does not account for the trim and offsets the time of the star position keyframes by minus one second, putting the adjustment layers blur effect out of sync with the keyframes in the V3 star layer.

This problem arose with the 2026.0.1 update. I have many setups with this effect that work fine in the 2025 version of PP. In other words, the Track Matte Key reads the position of the trimmed star clip as it should be in the timeline in 2025.

I have isolated the error to trimming the clip that the Track Matte Key is referencing.

To explain it another way. If the rimmed matte layer has a position (or any other) keyframe at the beginning and end of the trimmed clip, the Track Matte Key disregards the trim and reads the position of the keyframes at the start of the clip, wherever that would be in the timeline.

Interestingly, creating this setup from scratch in 2026 does seem to fix the issue, however, my project is a feature film with many setups like this and importing the project into PP 2026 does not fix it. So what to do?

Hope that helps (I really need help resolving this.)

    Thanks,

    Tom

AFAIK track matte’s behavior has not changed.

Please post screenshots of what you are trying to achieve.

Hi @LastArkTom - I agree with @Ann Bens  I’m not sure what is the difference between your screenshots.  Nothing has changed in regards to the track matte effect.  Could you help us understand more by what you are trying to do?  A screen recording could help as well.
