Transcribing Prem 24.5 not responding

Great. Updated just now because Prem 24.4 (previous to 24.5) was crashing every time the transcribing function was used. It would crash just as it got to the end of EACH CLIP.

Now, the transcribing function in the new Premiere 24.5 isn't working with proxy clips (made from Sony FX6 media) even though it works with the high res FX6 and Sony A7SIII media.  Two steps forward, one step back.

Working on Mac Studio 2022 M1 Max 32gb ram, OS Monterey 12.6. Thanks.

Thanks for following up on those issues.

Installed latest iteration and it's good to see the clip properties function returned, 'though the transcription is still not working with proxies. Also re-set the transcription follow-sequence function.

@Afterglow,

Sorry it took a few days to test.

The proxy file does not transcribe. The transcribe button can be clicked, the dialogue appears, and I can click ok. The screen changes briefly, but there is no transcription (unless I had first transcribed the original file). This was true whether I picked Channel 2 or mix.

If I create my own proxy of the original, it works. I don't see a difference looking at the 2 in MediaInfo. The original is 4 mono tracks and comes into PR as such.

As you say, importing the problematic proxy as a clip results in it transcoding without a problem.

@Kerstin Ebert @Alexander_DVA Do you see the issue?

Scrolling while playing is working correctly for me in 24.5.0. I would double-check that you did not accidentally turn off auto-scrolling in the transcript tab options. There was a report like this, but I can't find it at the moment. I think it had to do with how editing was occurring.

Another Transcribe issue:

After a transcript has been made, the text no longer follows the clips in an edited timeline. In the previous version, wherever you were in the timeline, the corresponding text word would be highlighted in blue AND the text would keep scrolling up in the text window as you moved along the timeline. Now no more. It's the same whether the sequence of clips is in the timeline or in the source monitor. Even if it is just one interview, the text window does not scroll up or down as it did in the previous version.

How many years did I wait as a filmmaker working with mostly interview material for this to be invented and effective? And now, it's gone in the matter of a single iterative update. Or is it me or my system?

With every update at Premiere, you guys should make a video piece explaining why you've made the update with an actual "editor" (one of you two here) explaining what the engineers have done and why. I'd watch it. It would give a lot of credibility to the updates that are seemingly just foisted on the video editing world - as opposed to the short flashy videos that focus on the bling.

Thanks.

Thanks, am sending the original .mxf plus a proxy prores clip via Hightail to your pm.

@Afterglow,

Thanks for the testing and report.

Sample files would help replicate.

@Alexander_DVA @Kerstin Ebert

The shortcut has also been re-enabled in the Beta, so should be back in the next release update.

Thanks for the responses.

More testing reveals that the pro res proxies when imported as clips work with the Transcribe function which seems to rule out the Transcribe function not handling the pro res codec. But where it is working as a proxy alternative to the full res version, say, of the FX6 or A7SIII footage, Transcribe will not work.

I skimmed through the explanation of the clip properties shortcut loss and have now implemented the workaround. I've only ever used the clip properties viewing function with a keyboard shortcut so the workaround adds more steps/keystrokes. Since I often check on the properties of the constantly diverse range of still images I edit with, I'd love to see the shortcut restored.

@Afterglow,

Thanks for the detailed info. Proxies had issues, but the new tests I just did are working. Can you post a small sample clip of an original and proxy?

Re "media file properties" from selection in the timeline, see this post that updates what was very confusing.

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-beta-discussions/the-properties-of-the-video-on-the-timeline-are-missing/m-p/14736749#M9699

It will not return to the right-click menu, but the shortcut from the timeline will be reinstated. I describe a workaround in the final paragraph of that update.

The transcribing function works with FX6 and A7SIII clips but not with proxies made from those clips. Seems to work with gopro footage, imported mp4 files, Sony PMW F3 files, mp3 audio files - these are what were sitting on my drive.

The proxies were made with the previous Prem version as Pro Res Quicktime proxy.

Get Media File Properties for .. Selection is also no longer working when the clip is in the sequence.

How does all this stuff change with an update?

Hi @Afterglow,

Thanks for the bug report and the detailed information you provided. Does the same thing happen with other media formats or just this one? If you have time, could you check? Let the team know. Sorry for this frustrating issue. @Stan Jones do you see anything familiar here?

I hope we can help you soon.

Thanks,
Kevin
