XML import results in duplicate media regardless of settings

I've spent an hour searching through forums regarding this issue. It appears as though Adobe has decided that duplicate media isn't a big enough problem for their software engineers to solve. Instead, Adobe would rather spend time implementing AI and other features that lends themselves more towards marketing bylines than to fix long standing issues.

I have tried every solution I have come across, and Premiere continues to import duplicate media when importing XML files. This is insanely frustrating and a massive waste of time. Plus, there's no way to consolidate the duplicates. The "Consolodate Duplicates" command does nothing. In all the advancements made to Premiere Pro, it somehow can't tell that two clips sourced from the exact same file in the exact same directory are, in fact, THE SAME. Davinci Resolve can do this.

There are literally HUNDREDS of posts across many forums - both Adobe sponsored and not - asking for a solution to this issue. This post go back well over 10 years.

This has been an issue for years... seriously need to fix it!! Otherwise anyone editing large complex projects will jump ship.

Very slack guys.

Well, I'm editing with 1000 media files within a project.
As soon as I do an XML EXPORT because I'm synchronizing files in external software.
|All the files appear in the project twice, it creates confusion and just double work in sorting again.
I've sent videos to support a million times and I've also talked to you and I don't understand why you don't solve it in version 24.6, it worked perfectly.
I tried installing beta version 25.6 and the phenomenon still occurs.
Take care of it, what's your problem?

@jamieclarke,

I responded in a thread on this topic a while back. I tested the "reimport PR FCP XML export" in Beta 25.6.0.14.

I have a simple project with 2 clips and 1 sequence. I have no bins, and did not create one for the import. All of one clip and part of the second clip are included in the sequence. The XML export is of a sequence, not the whole project. One reimport via Media Browser (with allow duplicates on the default - not selected), I get an odd result: a second instance of the "full clip" asset and the sequence are imported. I think this is what most users refer to as duplicates - they are the same file, but it is confusing to have them both imported. But the second clip, used partially in the sequence, was not duplicated.

The earlier thread is in this post (merged with the thread I linked to):

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-bugs/p-duplicate-clips-when-reimporting-footages-syncaila/idc-p/15304403#M49960

FYI, the first time I tried exporting, it locks up: I get the "ding" that tells me a dialog is open out of view. I closed with task manager. The second time it worked.

Hi @michellegranger3 - I do not see this issue in beta currently version 25.6.0 build 14.

Hi there -- has this been solved by Adobe?

Here's another route to try:

Start project #1, add media, create a sequence, add media to the sequence, and export an XML.

Start project #2, import the XML into the new project.

Revert back to project #1. Using the Media Browser, ensure "Allow Duplicate Media During Import" is unchecked. Import the sequence from project #2. All of the media will now be duplicated.

Again, Consolidate Duplicates does nothing.

This has been an issue for YEARS. Import ANY xml into Premiere that includes identical media to what is already populated within the project, and that media will be duplicated. Consolidate duplicates does nothing.

Try this:

Start a new project and populate it with some basic media. Create a new sequence, and place the media in the new sequence. Export the sequence to XML.

Now, without making any changes to that XML, import it back into the project. All of the media referenced in the XML is now duplicated in the project. Idental file names, file locations, and identical metadata. Yet Premiere thinks they're different.

Try using the Consolidate Duplicates function. Nothing happens.

Hi @jentertain -   Thanks for submitting your bug report. We need a few more details to try to help with the issue.
Please see, How do I write a bug report?

Can you post your reproducible steps.

Sorry for the frustration.

this is still a huge problem and has been documented in this thread 20 times. it’s super reproducible and absurd this isn’t fixed. i pay you guys thousands of dollars a month for monthly updates like this exactly and all i get is AI garbage.
