AE needs an Edge Extend / Color Smear

After effects is in DIRE need of an edge extend tool. When dealing with keys or roto that has haloing and edge contamination issues and/or transparency from motion blur. To the best of my knoledge, there is no way in AE to extend the color and luminance values from the core of the key and extend them outward. This is a vital tool for correcting edges. I have been looking for over a decade for a tool or technique that can reliably to this in AE, and there isn't one. I literally have to have a Nuke artist do this for me.

Nuke has a myriad of tools for the the clean up of contaminated edges on roto or keys.

This is an example of what edge extend does in Nuke. this isn't an averaging of the overall pixels, it just extends the values outward so things like motion blur can be rebuilt.

Here's a video describing the process of using Color Smear with an actor very quickly crossing a bright monitor that needs screen replacement. this is something I do regularly, and it's a total pain in AE.

Completely agree. Fusion has this functionality—long over due in After Effects.

Agreed! I use Key Cleaner and Refine soft matte in tandem every single day, but I still have to manually paint on top of it and do hours of work to fix little things that simply wouldnt be an issue if AE had a better tool for this job. I dream of a day when AE has a small smattering of simple but life changing compositing tools, this would be a quality of life update that would make me so much happier!

definately definately agree to everything said here. AE could focus solely on adding a suite of built-in compositing effects and it would change every AE users life. I honestly don't know why they won't do it, I can't imagine building the tools would be harder than anything else. Edge extend, light wrap, edge blur - make straightforward plug ins and put them in a single fly out panel within the effects list. Copy what Nuke has and then build on that to make them even better.

Enough of the cloud sharing, making every creative director want to micromanage and work over your shoulder remotely. Give us the basic functionality please!

Yes, pleeeease add this to AE. It seems like such a basic tool that needs to exist. Using Refine Soft/Hard Matte or the Minimax effect, sometimes you can make it work but they're no real replacement for a proper edge extend.
