Control timeline properties from the effects panel - Effects panel to Properties panel

Camera layers, Lights, Sound, these layers will never have effects applied to them, why would we display an empty effects panel and waste AE screen real-estate, while it could be the perfect place to control the properties for these layers?

Think about other properties like shape layers for example and how easy it would be to just control their properties in the effect/properties panel!

Here is how that could work: http://www.sandervandijk.tv/after-effects-features/effects#property-controls

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your valuable feedback and for sharing your ideas on improving After Effects. We appreciate your enthusiasm for improving these workflows and for your patience in our response.

We’re excited to announce that the Properties panel, which many of you have requested, was released in After Effects 23.4 and has received several updates since then. The Properties panel allows you to control various layer properties directly from a centralized location, streamlining your workflow and making it easier to manage your projects.

With the Properties panel, you can now:

  • Adjust and keyframe properties for all layer Transforms.
  • Use a dedicated inspector pane and surfaced properties for Shape layers, including parametric shapes, stroke caps/joins, and more.
  • Edit all Text and Paragraph properties for Text layers without switching between different panels.
  • View and modify Essential Properties of pre-comps (added in 23.6).
  • Access Camera and Lights properties (added in 24.5) including new Environment lights.

We believe this update addresses many of the concerns and suggestions you’ve raised, and we hope it significantly improves your experience with After Effects. Thank you for your continued support and for helping us make After Effects better.

Cheers,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

Why not think of making it possible to view the properties of a layer in another window or panel other than the default one at the height of the timeline, a bit like effects or filters, to avoid opening many lines in the timeline, it would be really useful to improve your workflow, thanks.

@nazmul You misunderstand. The 'property controls' panel is not an existing feature, it's an idea mocked up by Sander to show how it could work. If you think you'd find such a feature useful then you can vote for it. And then Adobe will most likely ignore you.

This would be beneficial to every animator! Please consider implementing a “Property Panel” as it is part of PS, AI and InDesign as well! This would make it easier for users who deal with AE for the first time and make it easier to discover as well. Thanks!

This sounds like a great idea. Either way, some type of rework or option to configure a panel like this would be very useful
