For better editing and comparison I think a "create a virtual copy" option would be very nice.

There's not yet an option in Lightroom to create Virtual Copies.

@Rikk , I understand the spirit, but this thread is marked as implemented… and like you said, it’s 7 years old. Like many requests, it just won’t be implemented because of risk of cannibalisation of LR mobile. LR has stopped evolving and requests are never fulfilled. People have the right to know know LR is not evolving anymore and what happens to their requests…

@Rikk

I'm sure you know this, but it's a potential irritation to say "X feature would cover your needs, so don't worry about Y feature's absence" Many users (especially of LrC, as it is the more technical, Pro product) are quite knowledgeable and have done their homework before complaining. I suspect that response set the stage for the subsequent irritation. Remember, we LrC users never asked for a 2nd subset/Ven diagram LR ecosystem. We were hoping to extend our workflow into Mobile with new UI for the existing features (maybe a subset of those features at first), rather than spawn new ones that partially replicate LrC features and do not necessarily sync across all products. That said, the current strategy is how Adobe chose to solve the technical execution of its mobile strategy. I'm not sure Adobe made the right call there, but I think it best that we all assume the best intentions in each other. I'm giving Adobe lots of time to right the Mobile ship. I hope Adobe can find the grace to indulge the users in their concerns/complaints about how the current state of the ecosystem isn't working for them. It's not working for me either. And I bleed PostScript.

From Kunde's original post:

"So on the desktop I create VCs for the "blog crop". Now I wanted to do it with my iPad in Lr mobile, but it doesn't work."

Versions does allow for multiple crops of an edited image in Lightroom Mobile. It may not be the same as a Virtual Copy or a syncing asset to LrC but it does allow for the blog crop the poster requests.

Over time, this thread has evolved into the authoritative thread for the following in the 7 years since it was since it was originally posted.

  1.  Snapshots in the Ecosystem (originally just the LrM Client)
  2.  Virtual Copies in the Ecosystem (originally just the LrM Client)
  3.  Syncing of 1&2 across Ecosystem clients
  4.  Syncing of 1&2 with Lightroom Classic

This thread is cross-referenced with our internal stories regarding the feature requests 1-4 listed above. Rather than consign Kunde's post to obscurity by leaving it as was, it was brought into the broader discussion so that product management would have an aggregate of the full discussion rather than disjoint threads sprinkled randomly throughout a forum.

Ultimately this thread continues to collect and report feedback on the feature set mentioned above. It is not 'closed'.

@Rikk I think it’s dishonest to merge and close this request as virtual copies are NOT implemented in mobile.

The poster is aware of the versions and does not meet the needs.

@Rikk

In LrC there's "virtual copies" and "snapshots" and there's a reason for it. "Versions" is like snapshots and not like virtual copies (which e.g. can live in different albums/collections).

Apart from this they are not even synchronized as snapshots into LrC. So that's not really a solution...

@Rikk

As I've written in my post. "Versoins" doesn't do it, since they don't synchronize to LrC, neither as virtual copies nor as snapshots.
So PLEASE add a mechanism to synchronize virtual copies between LrC and the cloud for BOTH ways. It's kind off odd to support only one way (from LrC into the cloud).

There's no point in having multiple versions in the cloud and only the last one back into LrC.

Hi, the „Version Feature“ does allow to toggle between to Versions of an edit - but the picture does remain only once in my Collection. Using the VC on LR, the pictures dies get virtually duplicated, show twice and I can edit/crop/etc. each of them independent and still will see each of them at the same time with all edit.
So Version is not similar and does not fulfill all features as the VC.

The Versions Feature should do what you need.

It allows you to create as many versions of an image as you like. It is on the Edit toolbar on the far right.  Versions sync between Lightroom Ecosystem Clients but not to Lightroom Classic.

Hi,

I am using LrC and Lr mobile in conjunction. Now I stumbled over a problem wit this combination: the lack of virtual copies (VC) in Lr mobile!

To put it more precisely:

VCs synchronize perfectly from LrC into the cloud. But there is no way back, i.e. you cannot create VCs in the cloud library and have them synchronized back into LrC. Of course there's the concept of „versions“ in Lr mobile, but these don‘t sync back to LrC. I thought that theses might import as snapshots, but that doesn‘t happen. 😞

Here's my workflow:

I want to edit images that have been imported to the iPad, to be synced to my desktop‘s LrC catalog. Some of these need a special crop for using them for blog posts. So on the desktop I create VCs for the "blog crop". Now I wanted to do it with my iPad in Lr mobile, but it doesn't work.

Do you have a solution for this?
