P: Ability to arrange & customize save-as file formats so popular formats are at the top

Photoshop supports about 20 formats, but I only use 4 or 5 of them. It's bugged me since 5.5 to have to fish for jpeg somewhere in the middle of the list. Can the file formats get arranged by most commonly used? And maybe allow us to remove stuff like targa and large file format that nobody uses.

You can go in to the Photoshop application file itself and remove them individually.

If your on Mac, follow this below.
Go to your Applications folder, then the Photoshop folder. Within the Photoshop folder you need to right click on the Photoshop app and choose 'Show Package Contents'.

This puts you in the Contents folder, from here just follow this path:
Contents » Required » Plug-Ins » File Formats

Remove formats at will. Not the cleanest or most correct way but it'll get those archaic formats out of the way for you.

I think almost everyone I know has asked for this at one time or another. Most of us probably only use 4 of the formats on any kind of regular basis. Here we can shorten our menus if we want, and still reveal all if we need. But the file format list is stuck in the last century.

Whenever one saves a file, a long list of file types are provided from which to choose. I only use a few of these. Is there anyway to rid this list of those I will never use and just have a list of the ones I want? I was advised to post this here and perhaps it will make the list as a feature request. Thanks!

I still get notifications on this thread after 5 years, and still hope for it. I did eventually start using large file format once in a while, but still don't need targa 😛

Their reasoning is pretty obvious... these little UI changes are just not gonna sell them new copies of the software, it's not super fun like face-aware liquify. It just makes existing paying customers 2% happier.

No real financial motive, it would strictly be out of the kindness of their hearts. So here's to hoping that someone with a kind heart reads this, 5 years later.

Realistically this is all we're asking: Put a little empty star icon next each existing format. Let me click that icon to favorite that format. The star becomes filled. Put the starred items at the top. That's it. 20 minutes tops.

Help me obi wan adobe, you're my only hope.

Will they read it? Probably. Will they do aything about it? Probably not - obviously the great cash-cow herd hasn't voted enough even though (a) it makes sense and (b) we've been asking for thiss for years now. we'll just get another non-answer about how there are so many other things being requested on a daily basis and they can't do everything. sure, there's some great improvements in the software (I've been on it since 3.0.4), but a comparatively simple thing like this that affects, as noted above, 100% of users, doesn't get the time of day.

Well said! I hope they read that.

Ripley, if I could reach out and hug you thru this screen I would do exactly that.

At last, I no longer have to scroll down to get to PNG, such a small kindness... thank you!!!

Just to (respectfully) inject some perspective from another product developer: if you have millions of users, and you're slicing your priorities according to things that have hundreds of votes rather than dozens... maybe the approach to prioritization is flawed?  Because your granularity is .0001% vs. .00002%.

In that light, maybe a suggestion which clearly would touch 100% of your users deserves a different weighting?

My company has maybe 25,000 users, and we listen to anyone who takes the time to write; but the #1 method we use for choosing which features and enhancements to prioritize is... our own judgment as product development specialists.  We're in a unique position to understand the ways of doing the most good for the most people, which is different than seeking to soothe the small groups of disproportionately vocal users (aka the grumps).

It is understood - scientifically proven, actually - that people are very bad at predicting what they want or what will make them happy.  They tend to overfocus on the 1 or 2 things that are under their skin, which skews their perspective away from the countless other smaller --- but cumulatively *more impactful* --- sources of friction and inefficiency that escapes their notice.

I'm not talking about bugfixes, I'm talking about the kinds of functional and organizational enhancements that reduce the number of muscles, brain cells, and synaptic transmissions required to get from point A to point B.  In our experience EVERYONE loves those, they are rare gems in the UIX world and we pounce on them whenever they make their rarefied presence known.

I submit that this request is exactly that kind of enhancement.  Thanks for listening 🙂

I know. I've been asking for it since version 2.5. I hate to think how many years that is

People have been asking for this for much more than a decade... don't hold your breath.
